Rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan intensified this week after Kabul accused Islamabad of carrying out airstrikes that killed civilians and damaged infrastructure. Afghan officials say the attacks struck residential areas and key facilities, leaving at least six people dead and several others injured overnight. Pakistan, however, firmly rejected those allegations and maintained that its operations were directed solely at militant hideouts across the border.

Civilian Casualties Reported in Overnight Strikes

Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government said Pakistani aircraft launched strikes across multiple locations, including parts of Kabul and southern Afghanistan. According to government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, several homes were hit during the attacks, resulting in civilian casualties.

Authorities in Kabul reported that at least four people, including children, were killed in the city. More than a dozen others suffered injuries as explosions damaged nearby residential areas. In eastern Nangarhar province, officials also confirmed that a Pakistani mortar shell killed a woman and a child, highlighting the growing humanitarian concerns surrounding the conflict.

Mujahid further claimed that fuel depots belonging to the private airline Kam Air near Kandahar airport were struck during the operation. The facility supplies fuel not only to commercial airlines but also to United Nations aircraft operating in the region. Afghan officials argued that such targets clearly indicate civilian infrastructure was affected.

Despite these accusations, the full number of casualties across Afghanistan remains uncertain, as reports from several provinces continue to emerge.

Pakistan Denies Civilian Targeting

Pakistan’s government rejected the claims that civilians were intentionally targeted. The country’s Information Ministry stated that its military conducted “successful airstrikes inside Afghanistan” aimed exclusively at militant hideouts and logistical support networks.

Officials said four suspected bases linked to insurgent groups were hit during the operation. According to Islamabad, the strikes were part of a broader campaign against militants operating along the volatile border region.

Pakistan has consistently argued that these groups, particularly Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), use Afghan territory as a staging ground for attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul has repeatedly denied harboring such militants.

Cross-Border Retaliation and Drone Activity

The situation escalated further when Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry said it retaliated by targeting Pakistani military installations in the Kohat district. Afghan officials claimed the response inflicted heavy losses on Pakistani forces.

Meanwhile, an Afghan intelligence spokesman stated that two drones were launched toward a military facility near Islamabad. Pakistani police, however, said the drones were detected early and neutralized using electronic countermeasures, adding that no damage occurred.

Pakistan’s Information Ministry also reported a separate drone attempt allegedly linked to the TTP in Kohat. Security forces shot down the devices, though falling debris injured two civilians.

These exchanges underscore how rapidly the confrontation is expanding beyond isolated incidents into sustained cross-border operations.

Violence Spreads on Both Sides of the Border

As military tensions rise, militant attacks inside Pakistan continue to add pressure on security forces. In Lakki Marwat, a roadside bomb targeting a police vehicle killed six officers, according to local police official Sajjad Khan.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on the TTP, which has carried out similar attacks in the past. The group has significantly increased its operations since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Pakistan maintains that the surge in violence is linked to militants operating from Afghan territory, an accusation the Taliban government strongly denies.

Regional Concerns Grow Amid Prolonged Conflict

The ongoing confrontation has now entered its third week, raising fears of broader instability in an already volatile region. Both Afghanistan and Pakistan claim to have inflicted heavy losses on each other’s forces, marking some of the most intense fighting between the neighbors in years.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the country’s military has killed hundreds of Afghan Taliban fighters since the clashes began. Afghan authorities have not confirmed those figures.

Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions have so far produced limited results. China’s special envoy Yue Xiaoyong recently visited Islamabad after meeting Afghan officials in Kabul, discussing regional security concerns and the threat posed by militant groups.

Despite repeated international calls for restraint, hostilities continue to escalate. Earlier mediation attempts, including a Qatari-brokered ceasefire and subsequent peace talks in Turkey, failed to produce a lasting agreement.

As both countries stand firm on their positions, the conflict risks deepening further unless meaningful diplomatic progress is achieved. The growing cycle of accusations, retaliation, and militant violence continues to test stability along one of South Asia’s most sensitive borders.
