The Club World Cup kicked off with fireworks as European giants showed their class across three blockbuster fixtures on Sunday. Paris Saint-Germain crushed Atlético Madrid with a dominant 4-0 victory, Bayern Munich dismantled Auckland City in a 10-goal masterclass, while Palmeiras and Porto played to a hard-fought goalless draw.
PSG Outclass Atlético Madrid in Commanding Win
Paris Saint-Germain began their Club World Cup journey with flair and finesse. Fresh off their Champions League triumph, PSG looked sharp as they rolled past 10-man Atlético Madrid 4-0 at the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Fabián Ruiz opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a stunning long-range strike. Just before halftime, PSG capitalized on an Atlético mistake as Vitinha doubled the lead after a slick counterattack.
Atlético thought they had clawed one back in the second half. Julián Alvarez's finish was disallowed after VAR spotted a foul by Koke in the build-up. It was a blow from which the Spanish side could not recover.
Substitute Senny Mayulu sealed the result in the 87th minute with a composed finish. Lee Kang-in then calmly converted a stoppage-time penalty to cap off a clinical performance by the French champions. Atlético’s misery was compounded by Clément Lenglet’s red card late in the game.
Bayern Munich Hit Auckland City for Ten in Record Rout
Bayern Munich wasted no time asserting their dominance in their Club World Cup debut. The German champions destroyed Auckland City 10-0 at TQL Stadium, with Jamal Musiala grabbing headlines on his return from injury.
Kingsley Coman set the tone early, scoring in the sixth minute. The goals kept coming, with Thomas Müller, Michael Olise, and Coman all netting twice.
Bayern’s relentless attack produced 17 shots on target against their part-time opponents.
Musiala, coming on in the 61st minute, marked his return in style. He struck in the 67th minute, converted a penalty six minutes later, and bagged his third in the 84th. It was a 17-minute hat-trick that reminded fans of his lethal instinct.
The match also had off-field drama. A banner unfurled by fans criticized FIFA governance, referencing the infamous 2015 Zurich hotel raid that rocked the football world.
Palmeiras and Porto Battle to Stalemate in Gritty Clash
Palmeiras and Porto played out a cagey 0-0 draw at a half-full MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Despite the lack of goals, the match delivered in intensity and competitive spirit.
Palmeiras had a slight edge in possession and shots, controlling 55.3% of the ball and firing 19 shots to Porto’s 14. Brazilian teenager Estevão had a golden chance just before the half, but Porto goalkeeper Cláudio Ramos was alert. Richard Ríos’ follow-up attempt was blocked.
The second half saw Palmeiras push forward with more intent. Raphael Veiga and Lucas Evangelista both came close in stoppage time, but Ramos stood firm between the posts.
The Brazilian side showed more aggression, committing 21 fouls compared to Porto’s 12. Weverton, Palmeiras' goalkeeper, made three important saves to deny the Portuguese outfit a late winner.
Group A Still Wide Open After Goalless Ties
Sunday’s results leave Group A wide open. Palmeiras and Porto sit level following their stalemate, while Inter Miami and Al Ahly also played out a 0-0 draw on Saturday. All four teams remain in contention heading into the next round.
Palmeiras will face African giants Al Ahly on Thursday in East Rutherford, while Porto takes on Inter Miami the same day in Atlanta. With knockout spots up for grabs, every goal could prove crucial.
