During winter, access to Quebec provincial parks will be complimentary for three days each week, according to an announcement by SEPAQ.

November 30, 2023

Quebec is opening the doors of its provincial parks for three days a week at no cost this winter, offering nature enthusiasts increased access to the natural beauty the region has to offer.

The initiative, backed by an $800,000 investment from the province, builds upon the success of last winter's program, which saw over 57,000 individuals taking advantage of free park visits. Unlike the previous year, where two days a week were designated for free entry over 24 days, this winter's program extends to three days a week, covering a total of 39 days. The specific days will vary weekly, and interested parties can refer to the calendar for details.

Isabelle Charest, Quebec's minister responsible for sport, leisure, and the outdoors, emphasized the well-established benefits of engaging with nature and maintaining an active lifestyle. She highlighted the province's fortune in having vast national parks, characterizing them as exceptional playgrounds.

SEPAQ, the organization overseeing provincial parks, echoes this sentiment, noting the recognized role of protected natural territories in enhancing public health. Nelly Rodrigue, SEPAQ's interim president and CEO, anticipates that the government's continued initiative will inspire more people to partake in the advantages of nature while exploring the captivating landscapes that belong to them.

Typically, adults pay $9.55 per day for access to SEPAQ provincial parks, with entry being free for individuals under the age of 17. To ensure site access, SEPAQ recommends reserving spots online up to 30 days in advance. However, it's essential to note that equipment rentals and paid activities within the parks will still incur charges.

This initiative aligns with the broader recognition of the positive impact of nature on physical and mental well-being, offering Quebec residents and visitors an extended opportunity to engage with the province's natural treasures without financial constraints. As the province opens its parks for free on a more extensive schedule, it aims to encourage a broader audience to enjoy the benefits of outdoor activities and foster a greater connection with the breathtaking landscapes that define Quebec's natural heritage.
