Montreal Canadiens defence and goalie Jacob Flower stand tall in Ottawa.

The Montreal Canadiens found a steady presence in goal as Jacob Fowler delivered another composed performance in a crucial victory over the Ottawa Senators. In a game that carried major playoff implications, the young goaltender stepped up under pressure and helped Montreal secure a 3–2 win at Canadian Tire Centre.

From the opening moments, Fowler looked calm and focused, tracking every puck and absorbing the intensity of the matchup. The Canadiens were playing the second half of a back-to-back, while the Senators entered the night rested and riding strong momentum. With both teams battling for valuable standings points, the stage was set for a high-stakes contest where every save mattered.

Jacob Fowler’s Calm Presence Anchors Canadiens

Fowler’s performance quickly became the defining story of the night. The 21-year-old stopped 31 shots, repeatedly frustrating Ottawa’s attack and giving Montreal the stability it needed.

Even in the most chaotic moments, Fowler remained composed. His body language never changed, whether facing a routine shot or a dangerous scoring chance. That quiet confidence spread across the Canadiens’ bench and allowed the team to stay patient during momentum swings.

After the game, Fowler simply described his mindset as calm, though his performance spoke far louder. Teammates and coaches recognized how his steady approach helped the Canadiens navigate one of their most demanding games of the season.

Momentum Swings Shape a Tense Contest

The game itself unfolded with rapid shifts in control. Ottawa applied immediate pressure and nearly scored early, forcing Fowler into quick saves that kept Montreal level.

Shortly afterward, the Canadiens gained their own opportunity when Ottawa’s Dylan Cozens collided with Fowler, sending Montreal to the power play. Juraj Slafkovsky capitalized by scoring his 24th goal of the season, giving the visitors an early boost.

However, the Senators responded quickly. They earned three consecutive power plays and Drake Batherson converted twice, sending Ottawa into the first intermission with the lead and renewed energy.

Montreal struggled briefly to regain its rhythm, yet Fowler’s continued stops prevented the game from slipping away.

Texier and Demidov Spark Canadiens Comeback

The Canadiens eventually found their breakthrough late in the second period. Alexandre Texier, filling in on the top line while Cole Caufield was sidelined with illness, scored a crucial goal with under three minutes remaining in the frame.

That equalizer shifted the game’s momentum. Montreal carried the pressure into the final period, pinning the Senators in their own zone for long stretches. The sustained attack paid off when Alex Newhook generated a rebound that Ivan Demidov converted into the go-ahead goal with just over seven minutes remaining.

At that point, the Canadiens had the lead, but the hardest part of the night still remained.

Fowler Delivers Key Saves in the Final Minute

Ottawa mounted a desperate push in the closing minutes, throwing everything toward the Canadiens’ net. The Senators created several dangerous opportunities, yet Fowler met each challenge head-on.

With exactly one minute left, he denied Claude Giroux from close range. Moments later he stopped Cozens in the slot, then turned aside another Giroux attempt before rejecting Cozens again during the frantic final sequence.

Those four consecutive saves sealed the victory and highlighted why the Canadiens continue to trust the young goaltender in important situations.

A Promising Future for Montreal’s Rising Goaltender

Although this was only Jacob Fowler’s 11th NHL game, his confidence already stands out. Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis has watched Fowler develop through multiple levels of the American system, from junior hockey to Boston College and international competition with Team USA.

That progression convinced the coaching staff he was ready for moments like this. The decision to start Fowler against Ottawa proved decisive, especially after Jakub Dobes handled duties the previous night and Samuel Montembeault struggled for consistency earlier in the season.

For the Canadiens, Fowler currently provides both reliable depth and renewed confidence in net. For fans, his performance suggests something even more exciting — the emergence of a potential cornerstone goaltender in Montreal.

As the playoff race intensifies, nights like this offer a glimpse of what the future might hold. If Fowler continues performing with the same calm authority, the Canadiens may soon find themselves relying on him far more often.
