Glen Michelson, a resident of Lethbridge, Alberta, has reached a significant milestone by turning 100 years old. Unlike many individuals who may downplay their birthdays as they age, Michelson is delighted to celebrate reaching a century of life.
Currently holding the title of the oldest retired member of the Lethbridge Police Service, Michelson stands as a unique figure in his community. During his birthday celebration, surrounded by friends and family, Michelson expressed his joy at reaching this long-awaited milestone. His excitement was palpable as he shared his sentiments, remarking, "I’m 100 years old. I’ve looked forward to this for a very long time."
The celebration was made even more special by the presence of Michelson's loved ones, including a granddaughter who traveled all the way from Reno, Nevada, to join in the festivities. Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Michelson's granddaughter, Heather Gazes, expressed her admiration for her grandfather's determination, stating, "He’s been talking about this for years saying he’s going to make it. And we all knew he would. So, it means so much to me to be able to come down here and see him and spend time with him."
Bill Plomp, a longtime friend of Michelson's who has known him since 1962, shared his awe at witnessing Michelson celebrate this momentous event. Plomp emphasized Michelson's extensive contributions to the community, both as a dedicated police officer and as an ambassador for the city. He remarked, "He’s been in the city a long time and a lot of people know him. And he’s been a very effective policeman and an ambassador for the city as well. It’s no wonder that a lot of people showed up."
Michelson's journey in law enforcement spans several decades, beginning when he joined the Lethbridge City Police Force in 1950. Over the course of his illustrious career, which included 37 years of service with both the RCMP and the Lethbridge police, Michelson established himself as a respected figure within the community. He retired in 1984, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.
In recognition of his contributions, Michelson was honored as the guest of honor at the RCMP's Musical Ride last year. Despite his many achievements, Michelson remains humble, cherishing the time spent with his loved ones and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to have lived such a long and fulfilling life. "I finally made it," he remarked, encapsulating the sense of accomplishment and contentment that comes with reaching such a significant milestone.
