Starting soon, some people heading to the United States, including from Canada, will need to pay a new visa fee. The $250 charge is called the “visa integrity fee.” It applies only to certain non-U.S. citizens. However, most Canadian citizens won’t need to worry about it.

Who Has to Pay?

Canadian permanent residents who need a U.S. visa must pay the fee. This includes people flying or driving into the U.S. who are not citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries. These travelers must already get a visa to enter, so the fee simply adds to that cost.

Also, Canadian citizens who are investors or engaged to U.S. citizens may need visas. These individuals will also have to pay the new charge. People who use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) under the VWP can still enter the U.S. without a visa and avoid the fee.

Most Canadians Not Affected

An immigration lawyer explained that the new fee won’t apply to the majority of Canadians. About 99% of Canadian citizens are visa-exempt. They can enter the U.S. with only a passport and do not need a visa for visits. So, they will not have to pay the extra $250.

Where Did the Fee Come From?

The fee is part of a new law in the United States called the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” It was signed on July 4. The law aims to support border security and reduce people overstaying their visas. Officials haven’t announced when the fee will start.

The new rule covers the current U.S. fiscal year. The amount may increase yearly to match inflation. The law also clearly says the fee cannot be waived or reduced.

Can You Get a Refund?

There are a few ways travelers might get their money back. If someone follows all the visa rules, does not work illegally, and leaves on time, they could qualify for a refund. People who adjust their visa status while in the U.S. may also be eligible.

Still, the refund process isn’t clear yet. The U.S. government said it needs to set up coordination between departments first. Updates will be shared through official government pages in the coming months.

What Happens Next?

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said more information will come soon. Officials are still working out how to put the law into action. The Department of State also promised to share updates when possible. So far, the Canadian government hasn’t made any statements about the change.
