Matt Savoie records the game-winner while Connor McDavid contributes three assists as the Oilers open a four-game homestand at Rogers Place with a 3-1 victory over the Predators on Sunday.
The Edmonton Oilers opened their four-game homestand with a determined performance, defeating the Nashville Predators 3–1 at Rogers Place on Sunday night. The victory delivered two valuable points in the Western Conference playoff race while showcasing a strong team response after an early setback.
Matt Savoie scored the decisive goal early in the second period, while captain Connor McDavid orchestrated the offense with three assists. The win also marked Edmonton’s 33rd of the season, though it came with concern after Leon Draisaitl exited the game due to injury.
Early Momentum Turns into Concern
Edmonton started the game with purpose and quickly created pressure in the offensive zone. Their efforts paid off during the first power play opportunity when Leon Draisaitl struck early, slipping a shot beneath the goaltender’s right pad to give the Oilers a 1–0 lead.
The goal was Draisaitl’s 35th of the season and continued his remarkable scoring record against Nashville. However, the momentum soon shifted after the star forward absorbed a heavy hit along the boards midway through the period.
Although Draisaitl briefly returned for a few shifts, he did not appear for the start of the second period. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch later said the medical staff evaluated him but provided no immediate update on his condition.
Despite the disruption, Edmonton maintained its defensive focus. The penalty-killing unit handled three Nashville power plays in the opening frame, preventing the visitors from generating sustained pressure.
Savoie Capitalizes on McDavid’s Playmaking
The Oilers extended their lead shortly after the second period began, thanks to a swift transition play led by their captain. After a turnover in the neutral zone, McDavid quickly turned defense into offense, carrying the puck on a two-on-one rush.
Instead of shooting, he slipped a precise pass across the ice to Matt Savoie, who finished into an open net for his 11th goal of the season. The play highlighted Savoie’s growing confidence, especially since returning to the top line alongside McDavid and Zach Hyman.
The rookie forward has quietly built momentum in recent weeks, recording nine points across his last ten games. His consistency since the mid-season break has also pushed him into the league’s top tier of rookie scorers.
Meanwhile, McDavid’s two assists through the first two periods extended his impressive point streak against Nashville to 18 games, matching the longest such streak of his career against any franchise.
Strong Defense and Goaltending Hold the Lead
Edmonton continued to control the pace through disciplined defensive play and reliable goaltending. Connor Ingram turned aside 27 shots throughout the night, delivering several key saves that preserved the Oilers’ advantage.
The penalty kill remained flawless, successfully neutralizing every Nashville power play opportunity. This defensive resilience proved critical as the Predators attempted to shift momentum in the later stages of the game.
Nashville finally broke through in the third period when Fedor Svechkov scored from the slot, cutting the Oilers’ lead to one goal. The moment briefly raised memories of Edmonton’s recent loss in St. Louis, where a late lead slipped away.
However, the Oilers stayed composed this time, managing the puck effectively and limiting Nashville’s scoring chances down the stretch.
Hyman Seals the Victory
As the Predators pushed for an equalizer with their net empty, Zach Hyman chased down a loose puck in the neutral zone. His empty-net goal with just over a minute remaining secured the 3–1 result and ensured Edmonton would not repeat its previous late-game collapse.
The play also gave McDavid his third assist of the night, capping another influential performance from the Oilers captain.
Oilers Look Ahead in Playoff Push
The victory provided a timely response following Friday’s loss to the St. Louis Blues and kept Edmonton firmly in the Pacific Division race. With momentum restored, the Oilers will now continue their homestand against the San Jose Sharks in another crucial matchup.
As the regular season enters its decisive stretch, Edmonton’s depth and resilience could prove vital. If Sunday’s performance is any indication, the team appears ready to rally together and strengthen its playoff positioning.
