The 2024 Olympics kicked off in Paris with a truly unforgettable opening ceremony that took the traditional approach and turned it on its head. Instead of the usual stadium spectacle, the ceremony transformed the River Seine into a grand stage. Thousands of athletes floated along the river on boats and barges, creating a stunning parade that passed by some of Paris's most iconic landmarks.
The nearly four-hour event was a feast for the senses, filled with vibrant performances and dramatic moments. The ceremony's finale featured French sports legends Teddy Riner, a judo champion, and Marie-Jose Perec, a celebrated sprinter, who lit a spectacular cauldron shaped like a hot air balloon. As the cauldron soared high into the night sky, it symbolized the start of the Games.

The sky was lit up with fireworks in blue, white, and red, reflecting the colours of the French flag. The athletes from 205 delegations, a total of 6,800 participants, journeyed along the river on 85 boats, each representing their respective countries.

Among the highlights were surprise performances, including a dazzling cabaret act by American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga and a poignant appearance by Canadian superstar Celine Dion, who captivated the audience with her return to the stage.

The day began with some challenges, including disruptions caused by arson attacks on the French train network and heavy rain that thwarted the initial plans to use the Parisian sunlight to enhance the river’s sparkle. Despite the rain forcing athletes to don rain ponchos and umbrellas, the event continued to shine brightly, showcasing a lively journey through French history, art, and culture, brought to life by about 2,000 musicians, dancers, and artists.

The final boats of the parade carried the largest groups of athletes, with the U.S. team leading the way as the next hosts for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, followed by the French team. Great Britain’s rower Helen Glover and diver Tom Daley proudly carried their flag, representing their country in this historic moment. This is the third time Paris has hosted the Summer Games, and the first in a century.

In his opening address, IOC President Thomas Bach highlighted the Games' role in uniting the world in peace amidst the current global and domestic political challenges. The 2024 Olympics, featuring over 10,500 athletes across 32 sports, will continue to captivate audiences until the closing ceremony on August 11.
