A dramatic finish in overtime lifted the St. Louis Blues to a thrilling 3–2 comeback victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. Robert Thomas delivered the decisive moment, firing a wrist shot past the goaltender with just nine seconds remaining in overtime to seal the win. The dramatic goal capped a resilient effort from the Blues, who erased a two-goal deficit in the final minutes of regulation.
The victory continued a strong stretch for St. Louis, which has now won six of its last seven games. With the win, the Blues moved closer to the Western Conference playoff race, narrowing the gap to a wild-card spot to just five points.
Oilers Take Early Control
For much of the night, the Oilers appeared to be firmly in control. Edmonton’s offense finally broke through late in the second period when Kasperi Kapanen capitalized on an opportunity with 4:19 remaining. The goal came after a steady offensive push and was assisted by Leon Draisaitl, who extended his personal point streak in the process.
Momentum stayed with Edmonton as the third period began. Just under ten minutes into the frame, Connor McDavid showcased his scoring touch once again, netting his 37th goal of the season to double the Oilers’ lead. The play seemed to place the game comfortably in Edmonton’s hands and gave the visitors a 2–0 advantage midway through the final period.
Meanwhile, the Blues struggled to generate offensive pressure during the early stages of the game. At one point, St. Louis went nearly twenty minutes without recording a single shot on goal, spanning the end of the first period and much of the second.
Blues Mount a Late Comeback
Despite the slow start, the Blues found a spark late in the third period. With 7:38 remaining in regulation, Pius Suter finally broke through for St. Louis, cutting the deficit to one and igniting energy inside the arena.
That momentum carried forward as the clock continued to wind down. With just 3:46 remaining, Cam Fowler delivered the equalizer, sending the puck past the Oilers’ netminder to tie the game at 2–2. Fowler’s impact extended beyond the goal, as he also contributed an assist earlier in the game, playing a key role in the Blues’ late surge.
The sudden turnaround forced overtime and shifted pressure onto Edmonton, which had controlled much of the night until the closing minutes.
Thomas Delivers the Decisive Moment
Overtime featured chances at both ends before Robert Thomas produced the game’s defining play. With only seconds remaining in the extra frame, Thomas found space and unleashed a precise wrist shot that beat the goaltender with nine seconds left on the clock.
The goal not only secured the comeback victory but also extended Thomas’ impressive form. He now holds a nine-game point streak, continuing to be one of the Blues’ most consistent offensive contributors during their recent surge.
Strong Goaltending and Streaks
Goaltender Joel Hofer played a crucial role in keeping St. Louis within reach throughout the contest. He finished with 36 saves and delivered several key stops while the Oilers maintained pressure early in the game. Hofer’s recent performances have been particularly strong, as he now holds an 8-2-2 record in his last 12 starts.
On the other side, Edmonton goaltender Connor Ingram recorded 22 saves but could not prevent the late comeback. The Oilers also struggled on the power play, going scoreless on three opportunities during the game.
Individually, Leon Draisaitl extended his impressive run with an assist, pushing his point streak to eight games that includes five goals and eleven assists. However, teammate Evan Bouchard saw his own nine-game point streak come to an end.
Looking Ahead
The Oilers concluded their four-game road trip with an even 2–2 record and now return home to face Nashville on Sunday. Edmonton will also be without Ryan Nugent-Hopkins temporarily, as the forward missed the game due to a personal matter.
Meanwhile, the Blues will look to carry their momentum into a three-game road trip beginning Sunday in Winnipeg. With their recent surge and renewed confidence, St. Louis remains firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot as the season continues.
