More than 23,000 cans of 7Up Zero Sugar Tropical Soda have been pulled from shelves by Buffalo Rock Company after it was discovered the drinks actually contained sugar. USA Today
An Alabama-based bottling company has recalled thousands of cans of 7Up after discovering that drinks labelled “Zero Sugar” actually contained regular sugar.
Buffalo Rock Company, an independent bottler, announced the recall on July 31. The affected product is 7Up Zero Sugar Tropical Soda packaged in 12-ounce cans.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall includes 1,954 cases, equal to 23,448 cans.
Where the Soda Was Sold
The recalled cans were distributed across three U.S. states: Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.
The packaging includes two different barcodes. The UPC printed on the cans is 078000037975, while the barcode on the 12-pack cartons is 078000037982.
Brand Owners Silent
The 7Up brand and formula belong to Keurig Dr Pepper, while PepsiCo oversees international distribution. Both companies were contacted for comment after the recall was announced, but neither responded.
What Consumers Should Know
The FDA notice did not provide direct instructions for customers who may have purchased the recalled soda.
Normally, people who buy recalled products are encouraged to stop using them immediately. The FDA also advises checking the recall notice for details, and either returning the product to the place of purchase or disposing of it properly.
The recall comes at a time when food and beverage safety alerts have been frequent. Other recent recalls have involved cheese with listeria risks, coffee possibly containing glass pieces, and cookies with unexpected wood fragments.
Why It Matters
Labelling mistakes can cause serious concerns for people who rely on accurate packaging. Shoppers who need to limit sugar intake for health reasons could unknowingly consume sugar in these mislabeled drinks.
The situation highlights how important it is for bottlers and distributors to maintain strict quality checks. Even large, trusted brands can face safety issues when mistakes happen in the production or packaging process.
