Jacinthe Belliveau’s routine walk in River Philip, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, turned into an extraordinary discovery when she stumbled upon a rare sight—a vibrant blue frog. What started as a simple mushroom foraging trip quickly became an unexpected adventure.
Belliveau was casually scanning the forest floor when she noticed something out of the ordinary. At first glance, it seemed like a small piece of blue plastic, but as she approached, she realized it was a frog. "I just happened to see what I thought was a little piece of blue plastic, and as I got closer it was the shape of a frog and it was blue," Belliveau recounted. Her initial surprise quickly turned into fascination as she confirmed it was indeed a blue frog.

She immediately began taking photos of the unique creature. The frog, which appeared to be perfectly still, seemed to tolerate the impromptu photo session for a while. Eventually, it made a few hops and disappeared into a hole in the ground. "It was really cool to see," Belliveau said, reflecting on the experience.

When she returned home, Belliveau shared her find with her husband, a biologist. His reaction mirrored her amazement. “I had never seen one before, and I didn’t realize how rare it was either,” she noted. Intrigued by the discovery, she did some research and learned more about the frog’s unusual coloration.

Belliveau speculated that the frog might be a batrachian, commonly known as a green frog, but with a twist. The blue appearance seemed to be due to a lack of the typical yellow pigmentation that usually gives these frogs their green colour. This rare pigment loss made the frog’s appearance a remarkable anomaly.

Reflecting on the encounter, Belliveau expressed her appreciation for the moment. “It is really neat. I think I didn’t realize how rare it was, so I just appreciate the moment, and being with this little creature that was a different colour,” she said. Her experience is a reminder of the surprising and often overlooked wonders of nature.
