McDonald’s has been busy this year trying out new ideas to keep customers interested. They started by improving their burgers, rolling out better versions of those sold regionally last year to all locations. They also tested a large Big Arch burger in other countries, considering it for the U.S. menu. To attract budget-conscious diners, McDonald’s introduced a $5 meal deal. Plus, they’re offering a nostalgic touch with a limited-edition Collector’s Meal featuring special cups.
Now, McDonald’s is focusing on offering something smaller. Starting September 10, participating McDonald’s locations will offer a Mini McFlurry. This new dessert is about one-third the size of the regular McFlurry, aiming to provide a smaller, more manageable treat for those who want just a bit of ice cream.

The Mini McFlurry isn’t just about being cute; it’s part of McDonald’s broader sustainability efforts. By offering a smaller portion, the Mini McFlurry helps cut down on food waste, gives customers a more affordable dessert option, and encourages people to add a sweet treat to their meal without feeling overwhelmed by the regular-sized McFlurry. Plus, the Mini McFlurry will be available in various limited-time flavours.

McDonald’s is also making eco-friendly changes to all sizes of the McFlurry. The company has been working to reduce its environmental impact and is focusing on cutting down plastic use. Previously, McFlurries came with a plastic lid and a thick plastic spoon, which also functioned as a part of the McFlurry machine. In 2023, McDonald’s switched to a smaller plastic spoon, and now they’re eliminating the plastic lid entirely. The new McFlurry cups will be made from cardboard with four flaps that cover the top, which McDonald’s says will help reduce waste. Their goal is to make all their primary guest packaging renewable, recycled, or certified by 2025.

Despite these improvements, there are questions about the Mini McFlurry’s practicality. Some customers wonder if the small size will affect how well the mix-ins are blended into the ice cream. Former McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz raised concerns in a TikTok video about whether the Mini McFlurry can mix ingredients properly and whether the ice cream machine’s condition might impact the dessert’s quality.
