Mediators from the U.S. and Arab nations are actively working to establish a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Talks are taking place in Egypt and Qatar with the aim of ending the 14-month-long conflict in Gaza. The proposed deal includes releasing hostages taken by Hamas during their October 2023 attack on Israel, alongside freeing Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza remains dire. On Thursday, medics reported that Israeli airstrikes killed at least 44 Palestinians. Strikes targeted multiple locations, including residential areas and shelters housing displaced families. Nine people were killed near the Beach refugee camp, four in Beit Lahiya, and more in various other attacks across the city. The Israeli military stated that their operations focused on Hamas militants using civilian infrastructure to plan attacks.

Residents in Gaza described the devastation, with entire neighborhoods like Jabalia and Rafah reportedly being destroyed. One displaced resident, Adel, lamented the ongoing destruction, saying entire towns were being wiped out. Aid organizations have also voiced concerns. A report from Doctors Without Borders described the situation as ethnic cleansing, citing forced displacement, severe injuries, and dire living conditions. The organization highlighted the severe lack of basic necessities like food, water, and medical supplies.

Israel denies these allegations and maintains that its actions target Hamas, which it accuses of using civilians as human shields. Hamas has denied these claims. The Israeli military has stated its campaign aims to eliminate Hamas and prevent its resurgence.

The ceasefire negotiations have faced hurdles. Hamas prefers a comprehensive deal, while Israel favors a phased approach. Talks are reportedly centered on the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Sources indicate that disagreements persist over Israel's demand to maintain security control in Gaza during any truce phases.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz affirmed that Israel intends to maintain full security control over Gaza even after defeating Hamas. Since the war began, Israeli strikes have displaced most of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, killed over 45,000 people, and left the region in ruins.

Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of committing acts of genocide by denying clean water to Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Israel, however, rejects these accusations, claiming it has facilitated the flow of water and aid despite attacks from Hamas.
