DJI unveils a compact, lightweight Flip drone with a unique folding design and a focus on user safety.

DJI has unveiled its latest innovation, the Flip drone, a compact and user-friendly device designed for both beginners and seasoned drone enthusiasts. Priced at $439, this drone blends the simplicity of the DJI Neo with the high-quality imaging of the DJI Mini, delivering excellent performance and safety features in a lightweight package.

Compact Design and Safety Features

The DJI Flip introduces a unique downward-folding mechanism that secures its large, shrouded propellers, making it safer for users. Built with a carbon fibre structure, it’s both strong and lightweight, weighing under 249 grams. This design allows users in most countries to fly it without needing a permit. Additionally, its all-around propeller guards minimize the risk of injuries or damage during operation.

Intuitive Operation for Beginners

New drone users will appreciate the Flip's intelligent shooting modes, including Dronie and Boomerang. These modes enable users to capture stunning aerial videos in 4K resolution with minimal effort. The drone can take off directly from your hand and uses a LiDAR sensor for obstacle detection, ensuring smooth and safe flights.

Advanced Controls for Experienced Pilots

For more seasoned operators, the Flip offers full manual control through the RC 2 or RC-N3 controllers. Its advanced FocusTrack technology, including ActiveTrack 4.0 and Spotlight 2.0, makes it easy to track moving subjects while avoiding obstacles. However, users should be cautious when flying backward, as the drone lacks rear obstacle detection.

Performance and Durability

The Flip boasts a flight speed of up to 26 MPH in sport mode and a battery life of up to 34 minutes under ideal conditions. While its lightweight design limits its stability in strong winds, the large propellers ensure quieter operation, making it ideal for events like weddings or concerts. The batteries can be recharged quickly using the Fly More kit, which includes additional accessories.

Imaging and Video Capabilities

Equipped with a 1/1.3-inch sensor, the Flip delivers high-quality photos and videos. It supports 4K video at 60fps and slow-motion at 100fps, ensuring excellent content for creators. However, vertical shooting is limited to 2.7K resolution, which may disappoint social media users.

Competitive Edge

DJI’s Flip directly competes with HoverAir’s lightweight drones but offers larger propellers and double the flight time. While the Flip's low ground clearance may require smooth surfaces for takeoff, its overall performance, safety, and ease of use make it a compelling option for drone enthusiasts.

Available in different packages, including the $779 Fly More kit with extra batteries and accessories, the DJI Flip offers great value for its price, combining cutting-edge technology with convenience.
