British singer Ed Sheeran was stopped from performing on the streets of Bengaluru after local police claimed he did not have the required permission. The incident occurred on Church Street, a popular shopping and entertainment area, ahead of his scheduled concert in the city.

A video showing a police officer disconnecting Sheeran’s microphone quickly went viral, sparking reactions online. Officials later explained that his team had requested approval to busk, but the request was denied due to concerns about congestion in the area.

However, Sheeran had a different version of events. He stated on Instagram, “We had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out before. It wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though. See you at the show tonight.”

The police intervention led to criticism on social media, with some fans arguing that public spaces in India often have unclear and restrictive rules. One user jokingly called the situation an example of “uncleocracy,” referring to unnecessary restrictions on young people having fun.

On the other hand, PC Mohan, a Member of Parliament from the ruling party, defended the police, stating, “Even global stars must follow local rules – no permit, no performance!”

Despite this minor setback, Sheeran went on to perform in front of a massive crowd at his scheduled concert at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru.

This is Sheeran’s second tour of India in two years. His 15-day visit has already taken him to Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai, with upcoming shows in Shillong and Delhi.

At his Bengaluru concert, Sheeran delighted fans by performing two popular Telugu songs alongside Indian singer Shilpa Rao. He has previously collaborated with Indian artists, including Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh at a concert in Birmingham last year.

During his time in India, Sheeran also worked with sitar musician Megha Rawoot on a special version of his hit song Shape of You, blending Western pop with Indian classical music.

Live music concerts have been gaining popularity in India, with major international artists performing across the country. Sheeran’s tour follows Dua Lipa’s recent concert in Mumbai and Coldplay’s multi-city tour.

According to a recent report, India’s live concert industry is rapidly growing, with an estimated worth of $700-900 million. With increasing disposable incomes and rising demand for international music events, India is becoming an important destination for global artists.
