At least 18 people lost their lives in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station late Saturday night. The tragic incident happened as thousands of passengers tried to board trains heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, according to local reports.

Authorities confirmed that among the dead were nine women and five children. The stampede occurred around 10 p.m. due to delays in two train services, causing a sudden rush of people. Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police KPS Malhotra stated that the situation spiraled out of control for about 10 to 15 minutes before security forces managed to restore order.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as people struggled to move through the overcrowded station. Many were carrying luggage, making it even harder to escape the crush. “It was terrifying. People were screaming, trying to find their families,” said a survivor.

Officials believe the crowd mainly consisted of pilgrims traveling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela. This festival, held once every 12 years, attracts millions of devotees from across the country. Just weeks earlier, another crowd crush at the event itself claimed dozens of lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragedy. “I am deeply distressed by the loss of lives. My thoughts are with the grieving families, and I pray for the injured to recover quickly. Authorities are providing full support to those affected,” he wrote on social media.

India’s Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also extended his condolences. He stated that four trains were deployed to clear the station, and police worked swiftly to bring the situation under control. “We are doing everything possible to assist those impacted by this unfortunate event,” he added.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is known as the world’s largest peaceful gathering. It takes place over six weeks, with an estimated 400 million people expected to attend this year. Officials are now reviewing safety measures to prevent further incidents as the festival continues.
