China has criticized the US for changing its position on Taiwan. The State Department recently updated its fact sheet, removing the statement that the US does not support Taiwan’s independence. While Taiwan welcomed the change, China reacted strongly, calling it a major setback in US-China relations.
China’s Foreign Ministry warned the US to correct its “mistakes” or risk serious damage to their diplomatic ties. Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun accused the US of sending a dangerous signal to pro-independence forces in Taiwan. He stated that this move proves the US is using Taiwan to challenge China.
Taiwan is a self-governing island, but China considers it part of its territory. Beijing has repeatedly said it will take control of Taiwan, by force if necessary. The Chinese government closely watches how the US handles Taiwan, and any shift in policy triggers strong reactions.
Donald Trump’s return to the White House has added more tension. His administration includes officials known for their strong stance against China. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has long supported Taiwan and has pushed for closer ties, including military aid. This has made China even more wary of US policies.
The US State Department described the wording change as a routine update. A spokesperson stated that the US still follows the “one China policy.” This means Washington recognizes Beijing as China’s sole government but does not accept its claim over Taiwan. The spokesperson also emphasized that the US wants peace in the Taiwan Strait and opposes any unilateral changes to the region’s status.
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, welcomed the update. He said it reflects a positive and supportive stance toward US-Taiwan relations. The updated fact sheet also states that the US will continue backing Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. Previously, it specified that Taiwan could join only groups that do not require statehood.
Under Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing has tried to isolate Taiwan politically, economically, and militarily. It has blocked Taiwan from joining major international organizations and pressured countries to cut diplomatic ties with the island.
The situation became even more tense last week when two US Navy ships sailed through the Taiwan Strait. This was the first time such an operation took place since Trump’s return to office. China’s military condemned the move, saying it increased security risks and sent the wrong message.
China views any US military presence in the region as a direct challenge. Analysts believe China is particularly concerned about Trump’s policies on Taiwan. With his administration filled with strong critics of Beijing, tensions between the US and China are expected to rise.
