Skype, once the go-to app for online calls, is officially shutting down on May 5 as Microsoft shifts its focus to Teams. The software giant, which acquired Skype in 2011, announced that the decision aims to streamline its communication tools and enhance its widely adopted Teams platform.

Launched in 2003, Skype revolutionized online communication, allowing people to make free voice and video calls worldwide. It quickly became a household name, replacing traditional landline calls and attracting millions of users. However, in recent years, Skype has struggled to compete with modern, more efficient platforms like Zoom and Slack.

One of the key reasons behind Skype’s downfall is its outdated technology, which failed to adapt to the mobile-first world. As smartphones became the primary tool for communication, Skype's performance issues made it less appealing. When remote work surged during the pandemic, businesses preferred Teams, which seamlessly integrated with Microsoft Office, making collaboration easier.

To make the transition smoother, Microsoft assures existing Skype users that they can log into Teams for free using their current accounts. Chats and contacts will automatically transfer, ensuring continuity.

Skype now joins a list of Microsoft’s discontinued ventures, including Internet Explorer and Windows Phone. Tech giants often struggle to sustain communication platforms, with Google also making multiple failed attempts through apps like Hangouts and Duo.

Despite shutting down Skype, Microsoft confirmed there would be no layoffs due to the transition. The company did not disclose Skype’s current user base but revealed that Teams now boasts around 320 million monthly active users.

Microsoft had high hopes for Skype when it acquired the platform for $8.5 billion in 2011, outbidding Google and Facebook. At that time, Skype had around 150 million monthly users, but by 2020, that number had plummeted to just 23 million. Even the pandemic-driven surge in virtual communication failed to revive its former glory.

Announcing the decision, Microsoft acknowledged Skype’s impact on digital communication, stating, “Skype has played a key role in shaping modern connections. We are honoured to have been part of this journey.”
