Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze in Yorkville early Wednesday, destroying six homes and damaging several others. NOW Toronto

A devastating fire tore through Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood early Wednesday morning, reducing six buildings to rubble and damaging several others. The fire, which started at a construction site on Scollard Street around 4:30 a.m., spread quickly to nearby structures and vehicles, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked tirelessly to contain the flames. Despite the intensity of the fire, no injuries have been reported. Crews are expected to remain in the area throughout the day, ensuring all hot spots are fully extinguished.

Due to safety concerns, Bay Street remains closed between Yorkville Avenue and Davenport Road. Commuters are advised to take alternate routes as firefighters continue their work.

Toronto Fire Deputy Chief Steve Darling provided updates from the scene, confirming that the fire was under control. However, the financial loss from the destruction is expected to be significant.

“There is going to be a significant dollar value loss here,” said Darling. “The six buildings that were involved were destroyed. There is exposure on either side, two or three, that will probably have to be gutted and renovated.”

Many of the damaged structures were historic buildings, some dating back centuries, which had been repurposed as businesses.

“The ones across the street received only damage to the facades, windows, and siding,” Darling added. “Those can be repaired.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Toronto Fire has not provided any details about what may have sparked the blaze, and the Fire Marshal will be investigating the incident.
