Peru's Sacred Valley of the Incas is a stunning destination for stargazing. Travel Pulse

Latin America offers some of the best locations for stargazing, far from city lights and in ideal weather conditions. Here are some top destinations where visitors can experience breathtaking night skies.

Sacred Valley of the Incas, Peru

Located near Cusco, Peru, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is one of the most mystical places in the world. This valley leads to the famous Machu Picchu, a site where the ancient Inca civilization built ceremonial spaces dedicated to the planets and stars.

Visitors can follow this ancient route and enjoy peaceful nights under a sky full of stars. Historians believe that the Incas saw a connection between the Urubamba River and the Milky Way.

There are several ways to explore the wonders of the sky in this region. The Cusco Planetarium offers astronomy tours, while glamping options at Humantay and Salkantay lagoons provide a unique way to experience the night sky. Another exciting option is a stargazing tour at the Salar de Uyuni.

Fray Jorge National Park, Chile

Chile is known for its astronomical tourism, and Fray Jorge National Park is one of the top locations for skywatching. Located in the Coquimbo region, about 260 miles from Santiago, this park boasts around 280 clear nights each year.

Fray Jorge has been recognized as a Starlight Zone by UNESCO, marking it as one of the best places for astronomical observation. Tours begin in La Serena, where visitors can experience total darkness for a perfect view of the stars. Experts provide an introduction to astronomy, and visitors even receive a digital souvenir photo.

San Juan Talpa, El Salvador

Just a short drive from San Salvador, San Juan Talpa is home to the Prudencio Lach Astronomical Observatory. This site was inaugurated in 2000 with the presence of astronomers Carolyn Shoemaker and David Levy, known for discovering the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet.

The observatory, operated by the Salvadoran Astronomy Association (ASTRO), offers educational programs and night sky observations. Visitors can use high-powered telescopes to see planets, the Moon, nebulae, and other celestial bodies. Private tours include guided visits and stunning sunset views.

Tupungato, Argentina

Tupungato, located in Mendoza, Argentina, is a dream destination for stargazing. With little artificial light and minimal rainfall, this area offers a clear and uninterrupted view of the night sky.

A top location for stargazing here is the Mirador Cristo Rey del Valle. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the sky using binoculars, telescopes, or even the naked eye. Guided tours offer a chance to observe constellations, planets, and even artificial satellites.

One of the most popular activities is a two-hour night observation, where visitors can see galaxies, nebulae, and planets like Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter through high-powered telescopes.

Barú Volcano National Park, Panama

Located in the province of Chiriquí, Panama, Barú Volcano National Park is a hidden gem for stargazing. This valley, free of light pollution, sits at the foot of the highest peak in Panama, making it an excellent spot for observing the stars.

In the Boquete community, guided night tours take visitors to the Valley of the Moon, a prime location for constellations. Visitors can also enjoy daytime activities such as hiking, climbing, and rafting while exploring the region’s natural beauty.
