Fire Chief David Speed addresses the media on March 6 after a major fire in downtown Bowmanville. CTV

A huge fire broke out late Wednesday night in downtown Bowmanville, causing serious damage to several historic buildings. Fire crews rushed to the scene on King Street West, near Temperance Street, just before midnight.

Firefighters Battle Intense Flames

Fire Chief David Speed said crews arrived to find heavy flames and thick smoke pouring from the roof. Firefighters quickly worked to control the fire, which had started on the third floor of a residential and commercial building. However, strong winds made the flames spread even faster.

As the fire grew, firefighters had to leave the building and instead focused on spraying water from the outside. The fire is now mostly under control, but crews are still on-site, ensuring every last bit is fully extinguished.

Speed noted that recent fire code upgrades in the building helped prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring units. However, the flames did reach the roof and spread across the top of the structure.

Residents Safely Evacuated, One Person May Be Missing

Authorities confirmed that all tenants were evacuated, and no injuries have been reported. However, police say they have received unconfirmed reports that one person might still be missing.

“There’s a possibility someone was in one of the units, but we cannot confirm it yet,” said Durham Regional Police Constable Emily Mitchell. Due to the damage, officials have not been able to search the affected area.

The Region of Durham’s Emergency Social Services team has placed displaced residents in a hotel. Officials are also working to find temporary housing for those affected.

Community Comes Together to Support Businesses

The fire has impacted multiple businesses in the area. Clarington’s Economic Development Office, along with the Clarington Board of Trade and Downtown Bowmanville Business Improvement Area, is reaching out to support affected business owners.

Mayor Adrian Foster expressed deep sorrow over the fire.

“Our hearts go out to everyone affected. We are heartbroken for those who lost their homes and businesses,” Foster said. “Historic Downtown Bowmanville is a cherished part of our community, and we will do everything we can to help rebuild.”

He also praised firefighters for their tireless efforts in battling the massive blaze.

Investigation Underway

The Ontario Fire Marshal has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, King Street remains closed between Scugog Street and Temperance Street. Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area.
