Milene Laoun, owner of Sophie Sucree, employs the Too Good To Go app to minimize food waste and assist customers in saving money.

January 09, 2024

As the cost of living continues to rise, individuals and businesses alike are seeking ways to mitigate unnecessary expenses, and one notable solution has emerged – the Too Good To Go app. This innovative platform serves as a bridge between consumers and food establishments, connecting them with perfectly edible, yet less-than-perfect items that would otherwise be destined for the trash.

Milene Laoun, the proprietor of Sophie Sucree, a vegan bakery in Montreal, attests to the app's effectiveness in reducing food wastage. Laoun explains that handmade products often exhibit minor imperfections, and to maintain high-quality standards, they eliminate these less-than-perfect items. The Too Good To Go app provides an avenue for businesses like hers to package surplus food into surprise bags, allowing consumers to purchase these items at a significant discount.

Nicolas Dot, the Public Relations Manager for Too Good To Go, highlights the environmental benefits of the app. Businesses using the platform not only prevent surplus food from ending up in landfills but also contribute to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions associated with food production and transportation. Dot emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about food waste and encourages a shift in mindset among Canadians regarding their approach to food consumption.

The app's impact is palpable, with Laoun revealing that, on any given day, the bakery could have 10 to 40 leftover pastries, which translates to creating two to 10 Too Good To Go boxes instead of discarding the items. Over a span of two-and-a-half years, the app claims to have saved more than 3.5 million meals in Canada.

Customers like Victoria Vonapartis appreciate the financial savings offered by the app. Vonapartis notes that accessing discounted items through Too Good To Go provides an opportunity to try new products without straining her grocery budget.

The developers of the app express their hope that Too Good To Go will encourage a shift in Canadian perspectives on food consumption. Dot emphasizes the need for increased awareness and urges individuals to prioritize the fight against food waste. Whether it's paying attention to best-before dates or being mindful of items in the fridge or pantry, every small action can contribute significantly to reducing the overall amount of food wasted.

In conclusion, the Too Good To Go app emerges as a practical and environmentally conscious solution to the growing issue of food waste in Canada. By connecting businesses with surplus food to budget-conscious consumers, the app not only saves meals from being discarded but also makes a positive impact on both individual budgets and the environment.
