A 14-year-old girl lost her life after a lion attacked her just outside Nairobi, Kenya. Wildlife officials said the attack happened near a ranch close to Nairobi National Park. The lion dragged the girl from a family compound at night.
Another teenager saw what happened and raised the alarm. Wildlife rangers quickly responded. They followed the lion's tracks to Mbagathi River, where they sadly found the girl's body. The search for the lion continues, but it has not yet been caught. Rangers have set traps and are still looking for the animal. They have also increased security in the area to prevent more attacks.
Nairobi National Park is only about 10 kilometers from the city. It is home to wild animals like lions, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards, and buffalos. Fences block animals from entering the city from three sides. But the park remains open to the south to let wildlife move freely in and out. While lions sometimes attack livestock, it is rare for them to kill humans.
Last year, a lion was caught on camera snatching a dog from a home close to the park. Wildlife officials warn that people living near wildlife areas should stay alert.
In a separate case, a 54-year-old man died after an elephant attacked him in Nyeri county, about 130 kilometers from Nairobi. The man was walking through Mere Forest when the elephant charged. He suffered serious chest injuries and broken ribs. Doctors at a nearby hospital could not save him.
These two recent attacks have raised concerns. Paula Kahumbu, who leads a conservation group, said such incidents are not rare. She wants better protection for people living near wildlife areas. She asked for stronger safety plans and better updates on where animals are moving.
She also suggested that lodges, camps, and homes near wild areas should have proper protection systems. These should include strong fences, loud alarms, lights, and special sprays to keep animals away.
“Prevention is our first and best line of defense,” she said.
Wildlife and people live close together in Kenya. Sometimes, that leads to danger. Experts say more action is needed to keep both people and animals safe. The recent deaths show how serious the risks can be when wild animals roam near homes.
