Dwayne Johnson as Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine
Dwayne Johnson steps into his boldest role yet in The Smashing Machine, a gritty biopic about MMA icon Mark Kerr. The first trailer dropped Tuesday, revealing Johnson’s intense transformation for the film.
A Deep Dive into a Fighter’s Turmoil
Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion, rose to fame in the late '90s. But behind the victories, his life was riddled with substance abuse and fractured relationships. The upcoming film explores that turbulent journey, tracing Kerr’s personal battles outside the ring.
From Gems to Grit: Safdie Goes Solo
Benny Safdie, best known for co-directing Uncut Gems and Good Time, takes the solo director’s chair this time. The Smashing Machine marks his first feature without his brother Josh. Safdie is also co-writing the film alongside Kerr.
An Ensemble Cast That Packs a Punch
Johnson is joined by Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples. Other cast members include Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk. This is Johnson and Blunt’s second on-screen pairing after Jungle Cruise. The duo will also reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio in an upcoming Martin Scorsese crime drama set in Hawaii.

More Than Muscles: Johnson’s Career Shift
Johnson recently spoke with Variety, revealing why this project means so much to him. He praised Safdie for his commitment to raw, unfiltered storytelling. “Benny wants to create... characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable,” said Johnson.
He admitted he’s ready to take on more emotionally demanding roles. “I want to make films that matter—films that explore humanity, struggle, and pain.”
Heavy Hitters Behind the Camera of The Smashing Machine
In addition to directing and writing, Safdie produces the film with Johnson, Mark Kerr, Danny Garcia, Eli Bush, Hiram Garcia, and David Koplan. Tracey Landon serves as executive producer.
Keep An Eye on Theaters
The Smashing Machine hits theaters on October 3. With its powerhouse cast, gripping storyline, and emotional depth, this biopic is poised to leave a lasting mark.
