A massive grass fire has caused chaos in west Edmonton, leading to the evacuation of several businesses and road closures. The fire broke out near 186 Street and 104 Avenue, spreading quickly and making it difficult for fire crews to gain control.

Fire Strikes Near Busy Area

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services has been working to control the blaze since 12:35 p.m. on May 6, 2025. The fire spread close to 111 Avenue and 189 Street, a busy area near Anthony Henday Drive. The fire is visible from various parts of the city, and even residents in St. Albert reported seeing smoke. The fire's intensity forced authorities to act quickly.

Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions

Due to the smoke and danger, northbound traffic on Anthony Henday Drive has been closed at 100 Avenue. Drivers have been rerouted, and significant delays are expected in the area. The Edmonton Police Service announced at 3:19 p.m. that 111 Avenue was closed from 184 Street to the Anthony Henday. Commuters are being advised to find alternate routes to avoid the area.

Firefighters Struggle to Contain Blaze

The fire continues to burn, and the situation remains tense. At 6:21 p.m., police confirmed that the fire was still active, and the road closures remained in effect. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services is doing everything it can to get the blaze under control, but the dry conditions have made it harder to manage.

Authorities are urging residents and commuters to stay clear of the affected areas to allow emergency teams to do their work. The smoke is still thick in the air, and officials have warned about the potential for more dangerous conditions.
