The search for a missing Quebec man has ended in sorrow. Officials have found the body of 22-year-old Leo DuFour. He had gone missing while hiking in the Adirondack Mountains last November.

Disappeared During Solo Hike
DuFour set out on a solo hike to Allen Mountain on November 29. When he didn’t return, his family raised the alarm. Search teams immediately started looking. Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures made the search difficult. Within a week, authorities feared the worst. They believed the rescue mission might turn into a recovery.

Discovery Brings Closure
After months with no sign of DuFour, a breakthrough finally came. On May 10, a group of hikers spotted human remains near the Mt. Allen Mountain trail in Essex County. They quickly alerted the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Forest Rangers, along with New York State Police, arrived at the site. After examining the remains, the DEC confirmed they belonged to Leo DuFour.

Search Teams Never Gave Up
DEC spokesperson John Salka said, “The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation today confirmed the remains of missing hiker Leo DuFour were found off the Mt. Allen Mountain trail in Essex County.”

The DEC thanked everyone who helped during the long search. “The DEC family offers our deepest condolences to the DuFour family for their loss and extends our appreciation to our dedicated Forest Rangers for their tireless efforts during the continuous and active search effort over the last few months,” the agency said.

Danger in the Mountains
Allen Mountain is known to be one of the tougher hikes in the Adirondacks. The trail is long, remote, and often muddy. Winter hikes can be especially risky due to sudden weather changes, freezing cold, and deep snow. Officials often advise against solo hiking in such areas during cold months.

A Sad End
The discovery of Leo DuFour’s body brings an end to months of worry for his family and community. While it is not the outcome they hoped for, it brings some closure. The authorities are continuing their investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
