French President Emmanuel Macron met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday in Jakarta. The meeting marked a key moment in France’s push to deepen partnerships in Southeast Asia.

The visit is part of Macron’s regional tour amid growing global instability. Before Jakarta, he was in Vietnam, where he signed a deal to sell 20 Airbus aircraft to Hanoi.

Macron, accompanied by First Lady Brigitte Macron, arrived in Jakarta Tuesday night. He described President Prabowo as a “great friend” and praised Indonesia as a strategic partner.

Focus on Defense Collaboration

Indonesia and France have steadily enhanced their defense cooperation over recent years. That partnership gained momentum while Prabowo served as Indonesia’s defense minister.

In January 2024, Indonesia finalized a deal to buy 42 French-made Rafale fighter jets. The first delivery is expected in early 2026.

Indonesia is also purchasing two Scorpene Evolved submarines from France. Additionally, 13 Thales ground control interception radars are included in the agreement. Five of these will be installed in Nusantara, Indonesia’s upcoming capital.

Future Weapons Procurement in the Pipeline

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin confirmed that both leaders would oversee the signing of a Letter of Intent. This document outlines future procurement plans, including more fighter jets and submarines.

Sjamsoeddin emphasized that the core purpose of Macron’s visit is to cement defense ties between the two nations.

Ceremonial Welcome and Strategic Talks

On Wednesday, President Prabowo formally welcomed President Macron and the First Lady at Merdeka Palace. Following the ceremony, the two presidents led a bilateral meeting covering various strategic issues.

Indonesia aims to modernize its military forces and expand its domestic defense industry. Prabowo has actively traveled abroad since 2019 to acquire new military technologies and enhance surveillance and territorial capabilities.

Modernizing Indonesia’s Aging Air Fleet

Indonesia currently operates a mix of aging fighter aircraft from the U.S., Russia, and the U.K. Many of these jets are reaching the end of their operational life. The government is eager to replace them with more advanced systems.

France has emerged as a key supplier in this modernization effort, reflecting a deepening trust between the two nations.

France Eyes Broader Regional Influence

Macron’s itinerary in Jakarta also includes a meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn. The discussion is expected to cover regional issues and geopolitical developments.

He is also scheduled to deliver a public lecture at Jakarta State University to strengthen cultural and academic ties.

Historic and Strategic Visits Ahead

On Thursday, Macron and Brigitte will visit the ancient Borobudur temple in Central Java. They are also expected to tour a military academy.

Their final stop in the region will be Singapore. There, Macron will speak at the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s top defense summit.

France and Indonesia Deepen Strategic Ties

This visit highlights France’s intent to play a more active role in Asia-Pacific affairs. For Indonesia, the partnership offers a pathway to enhance defense capabilities and secure vital trade links.

As global dynamics shift, this growing alliance between Paris and Jakarta signals a new chapter in regional security cooperation.
