A recent stir around Alex Ovechkin's possible retirement has been officially shut down by the Washington Capitals. The NHL team clarified that no decision has been made about the legendary forward’s future, despite a viral email suggesting otherwise.

Viral Email Sparks Retirement Rumors

The buzz started when a team sales staffer sent an email indicating the 2025-26 NHL season would be Ovechkin’s last. This message quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread speculation. News outlets picked it up, further fueling rumors that the Russian superstar would hang up his skates after next season.

However, the Capitals acted fast to set the record straight.

Capitals Clarify: No Decision on Retirement

The team’s public relations department addressed the issue on X (formerly Twitter). “An email was sent from an individual with the corporate sales department that mistakenly alluded to next year being Alex Ovechkin’s final year,” the post read. “No decision has been made on Alex Ovechkin’s future following the 2025-26 NHL season.”

Ovechkin’s Career: Still Going Strong

Ovechkin, who turns 40 before the next NHL season, is still showing no signs of slowing down. He’s entering his 21st season, all spent with the Washington Capitals. He’s also in the final year of a five-year contract signed in 2021.

This timing — the end of his contract combined with his record-breaking milestone — led many to believe retirement was near. But there’s no official confirmation from either Ovechkin or the team.

Record Breaker and Consistent Goal Scorer

This season, Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record, finishing with 897 career goals. He netted 44 of those this year alone, despite missing time due to a leg injury.

Even at his age, the Russian forward remains one of the league’s top scorers. He has scored over 40 goals in 14 different seasons and never scored fewer than 31 goals in any full season. His lowest season total came during the COVID-19-shortened 2020-21 season, where he still managed 24 goals.

A Champion with More to Offer?

Ovechkin helped lead the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in the 2017-18 season. After Washington’s recent playoff exit, he was asked whether he planned to make the 2025-26 campaign his final one. His response left the door wide open.

“To be honest with you, I haven’t thought about it yet,” Ovechkin said on May 17. “But we’ll see what’s going to happen. Obviously, I’m going to do my best to be able to do well next year and … we’ll see.”

What Lies Ahead?

For now, there’s no definitive answer about Ovechkin’s future beyond next season. Fans can look forward to another year of thrilling performances from the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer. Whether it’s his last season or not, one thing is clear — Alex Ovechkin remains a force on the ice.
