Activists Set Sail to Bring Aid
Greta Thunberg and 11 other activists started their journey from Sicily on Sunday. Their goal is to deliver a small amount of aid to Gaza. The area faces a severe humanitarian crisis with many people in need. The activists called the aid “symbolic” but important to show support.
Israel Prepares to Stop the Ship
An Israeli army spokesperson said Israel might stop the ship before it reaches Gaza. Brigadier General Effie Edfrin said, “For this case as well, we are prepared. We have gained experience in recent years.” This hints at a possible confrontation at sea.
History of Tensions at Sea
In 2010, Israel caused a global uproar after its forces attacked a ship carrying aid to Gaza. Nine people died during that incident. More recently, another aid boat linked to this group, called the Conscience, was damaged by drones near Malta.
The Ship ‘Madleen’
The current ship is named the Madleen and is run by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. It has already traveled 381 nautical miles since leaving Catania port. Greta Thunberg said before the trip, “We have to keep trying, because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity.” She added the mission is risky but staying silent is worse, especially when lives are at stake.
Claims and Denials on Genocide
Thunberg and the activists describe the crisis in Gaza as a genocide. Israel strongly denies these claims. The country says it ended a long blockade on Gaza in May after global pressure. Some aid operations, led by the United Nations, have restarted but with limits.
Humanitarian Situation Worsens
The president of the Red Cross called the Gaza situation “worse than hell on earth.” Recently, many aid centers had to close for a day due to security concerns. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a controversial aid group, stopped its work temporarily after many Palestinians were killed trying to get aid.
Deadly Clashes at Aid Centers
On Tuesday, at least 27 people died and dozens more were hurt near aid distribution points. The Israeli military said they fired on a group they saw as dangerous. The aid group said the incident happened far from their centers.
Controversy Around Gaza Humanitarian Foundation
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation receives support from the US but faces criticism. The UN and other aid groups question its independence because Israel backs it. This adds to the tension over how aid is managed in Gaza.
