The Vancouver Whitecaps delivered a commanding performance on Sunday night, defeating their regional rivals, the Seattle Sounders, 3-0. The win wasn’t just another tick in the standings — it set a new club record for the longest unbeaten streak in MLS, now at 11 games.

This victory came despite overwhelming odds. Vancouver’s lineup was hit hard by illness, injuries, and international call-ups. But the ‘Caps rose to the challenge and shut out Seattle, taking full advantage of a second-half meltdown by the visitors.

Unbeaten Streak Extends to 11 Matches

With this result, the Whitecaps improved to 10-1-5. The triumph was their 11th straight game without a loss in MLS play — a feat never before achieved in the club’s history. It’s a testament to their resilience, especially given the circumstances leading up to the match.

A Short-Staffed Squad Steps Up

Following the CONCACAF Champions Cup final on June 1, nearly half the Vancouver squad suffered a gastrointestinal illness. On top of that, nine players were absent due to international duty, and star midfielder Ryan Gauld remained sidelined with a knee injury.

In response, the Whitecaps turned to their developmental team. Seven Whitecaps FC 2 players were signed to short-term contracts just before the game. Six of them dressed for the match, waiting on the bench for a chance to contribute.

First Half Ends with a Hometown Hero’s Strike

The Sounders dominated possession early, controlling 65.1% in the first half and edging Vancouver in shots. But it was the home side that struck first.

In the 40th minute, Whitecaps rookie Jeevan Badwal made his mark. A beautiful setup from J.C. Ngando and Edier Ocampo found the 19-year-old academy product at the perfect spot. Badwal extended his leg and redirected the ball past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make it 1-0. It was his first-ever MLS goal, and it gave the Whitecaps a crucial lead going into the break.

Seattle Implodes in the Second Half

The second half turned chaotic quickly for the Sounders. In the 52nd minute, Seattle’s Nouhou was shown a straight red card after grabbing Mathias Laborda around the neck and dragging him down.

Just minutes later, Jonathan Bell joined him in the locker room. A reckless challenge on Ralph Priso earned the centre back another red card, reducing the Sounders to just nine players.
Seattle’s frustration was evident, and Vancouver seized the opportunity.

Rios and Kreilach Seal the Victory

In the 70th minute, Mexican striker Daniel Rios received a clever pass from Priso and rifled a right-footed shot into the net. It was Rios’ second goal of the season and gave the ‘Caps a comfortable 2-0 cushion.

Despite Seattle’s depleted defense, Stefan Frei did his best to keep the game within reach. He made two impressive saves to deny Ocampo and Priso in quick succession.

But another Sounders misstep led to a late penalty. Joao Paulo clipped Emmanuel Sabbi in the box in the 88th minute. Damir Kreilach, who subbed in for Badwal earlier, calmly slotted the ball into the corner, wrong-footing Frei and making it 3-0.

A Clean Sheet for Takaoka

Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka earned his eighth shutout of the season — an impressive feat and a crucial part of Vancouver’s historic run. Though Seattle had more possession and shots in the opening half, they failed to register a single shot on target throughout the entire match.

A Win That Means More Than Just Points

This match was more than just a 3-0 win. It was a statement. The Whitecaps, down several key players and battling a string of misfortunes, stood tall. They showed depth, heart, and tactical discipline. And they didn’t just survive — they thrived.

Now riding a record-setting unbeaten streak, Vancouver is proving that they’re not just playoff contenders, but serious title challengers.
