A tragic incident broke out at the “No Kings” rally in Salt Lake City on Saturday evening. A man fired shots during the demonstration, hitting another man with a rifle and a bystander. Sadly, the bystander later died at the hospital.
Protest Turns Violent
The “No Kings” rally began peacefully. People gathered to protest against monarchy-style leadership. According to the police, a man believed to be helping keep the peace fired at someone carrying a rifle. He hit that man and accidentally struck a second person standing nearby.
The man with the rifle has been identified as Arturo Gamboa, 24. Police arrested him and charged him with murder. Authorities believe he brought the gun to the protest and may have threatened others.
Fashion Designer Caught in the Crossfire
The innocent bystander who died has been identified as Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39. He was a fashion designer from Samoa. Officials said he was not involved in the fight. He was simply standing near the area when the shooting occurred.
Ah Loo was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive. Police and family members described him as someone full of life, talent, and kindness.
Officials Respond
Police Chief Brian Redd spoke about the shooting at a Sunday press conference. He explained that the incident began when someone saw Gamboa carrying a rifle. That’s when the shooter, trying to protect others, opened fire.
“Based on our investigation, it appears the man who fired the first shots thought he was protecting the crowd,” Redd said.
However, police are still gathering more facts. The case remains open, and more charges could be filed as they investigate.
Community in Shock
Many people are now mourning the death of Ah Loo. His friends and family are in deep sorrow. Several local groups have called for calm and peace, saying that violence should never be part of a peaceful protest.
Witnesses said the rally had been peaceful up to that point. Protesters had gathered to express their views with signs, chants, and songs. No one expected it to end in gunfire and death.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are reviewing videos, speaking with witnesses, and examining evidence. The man who shot both victims is cooperating with the investigation. Authorities have not released his name yet.
