French President Emmanuel Macron kicked off a symbolic state visit to the United Kingdom, urging stronger cooperation on global crises like Gaza and Ukraine while pushing for a post-Brexit reset between the two nations.
During a rare and historic address to both Houses of the British Parliament, Macron called for joint action to recognize a Palestinian state and reaffirmed Europe’s unwavering support for Ukraine. His three-day visit marks the first official trip by a European Union leader to the UK since Brexit.
Rebuilding Bridges After Brexit
Macron arrived in London at the invitation of King Charles III, signaling a new chapter in UK-France relations. Greeted by the royal family and escorted in horse-drawn carriages to Windsor Castle, Macron’s reception was steeped in tradition—but his message was focused on the future.
In Parliament, he delivered a speech in English, stressing that France and the UK must stand united on defense, climate action, immigration, and trade. He also highlighted the risks of being overly dependent on powers like the United States and China.
“We must walk together—hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder,” Macron declared, urging a deeper alliance built on shared values and mutual interests.
Two States for Peace
On the Israel-Gaza conflict, Macron didn’t mince words. With Gaza devastated and the West Bank under constant tension, he pushed for the recognition of a Palestinian state as the only viable path to lasting peace.
He invited Britain to join France in taking this step, calling it a necessary move to bring stability to the Middle East.
Stronger Together for Ukraine
Macron reiterated that European countries would “never abandon Ukraine,” even as the war with Russia drags on. With the UK and France collaborating on a joint military force, both leaders aim to boost readiness in case of a future ceasefire.
The two nations are expected to discuss next steps in a coalition meeting on Thursday, which will also include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key EU leaders.

A Toast to ‘Entente Amicale’
Later in the evening, King Charles hosted an elegant state banquet for Macron at Windsor Castle, joined by stars like Elton John and Mick Jagger. In a nod to the evolving relationship, Charles coined a new term—“Entente Amicale”—marking a shift from the historic “Entente Cordiale” of 1904 to a more modern and friendly partnership.
“To France, and to our new Entente—one for the future,” the King toasted.
Culture, Energy, and Common Goals
The visit also brought major announcements. French energy giant EDF committed to a £1.1 billion investment in a UK nuclear project. France will also lend the UK the famous Bayeux Tapestry, while London will share priceless Anglo-Saxon and Viking relics in return.
Macron is set to meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday to discuss migration and cross-Channel asylum issues. The UK hopes its support for Ukraine will open doors for a new asylum agreement with France.
With both nations looking ahead, Macron’s visit seems poised to reshape not just bilateral ties—but how the UK and EU can work together in a rapidly changing world.
