Fauja Singh, a name synonymous with endurance and inspiration, passed away at the age of 114. Known globally as the world’s oldest marathon runner, Singh died on Monday following a tragic road accident in Punjab.

The incident occurred on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway. According to BBC Punjabi, Singh was struck by a car in the afternoon. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to a severe head injury and was declared dead at 7:30 pm IST.

A Legend Born in Punjab

Fauja Singh was born on April 1, 1911, in Beyas village, located in Jalandhar, Punjab. From humble beginnings, he went on to become a global symbol of perseverance. He didn't start running professionally until his 80s, yet he broke stereotypes and set records that stunned the world.

Over the decades, Singh proved that age is no barrier to achievement. His remarkable fitness and unshakable spirit made him a beloved figure, not just in India, but across the world.

Late Bloomer, Global Star

Fauja Singh ran his first marathon in London at the age of 89. But that was just the beginning. He went on to complete several international marathons, including events in Toronto, New York, and Hong Kong. His most iconic moment came in 2011, when he completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon at the age of 100, becoming the world’s first centenarian to do so.

He clocked in over six hours, but that didn’t matter—what mattered was his determination. That historic feat earned him the title of “Turbaned Tornado” and global media recognition.

Singh’s story became a symbol of strength, resilience, and the limitless power of the human spirit.

An Advocate for Health and Humanity

Beyond his running achievements, Fauja Singh used his platform to promote health, fitness, and Sikh values. He often ran for charitable causes and was seen encouraging people of all ages to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

He once said, “The secret to a long life is to be stress-free, eat simple food, and run every day.” This mantra inspired many seniors to stay active and hopeful, regardless of age or circumstances.

Tributes Pour In

News of Fauja Singh’s tragic passing sent shockwaves across the country and the global sports community. Social media flooded with tributes. Athletes, politicians, and fans shared their memories and expressed grief.

Punjab’s Chief Minister described Singh as “a living legend whose life journey inspired generations.” Meanwhile, many from the Indian diaspora paid homage, remembering him not just as a runner, but as a torchbearer of Indian pride on the global stage.

A Legacy Etched in Time

Though Fauja Singh is no more, his legacy will continue to inspire countless people. He proved that it’s never too late to start something new. His life was a celebration of grit, positivity, and the triumph of the human spirit.

As the world mourns the death of Fauja Singh, it also remembers the joy and motivation he brought to millions. From a quiet village in Punjab to international marathon podiums, his journey was nothing short of extraordinary.

Fauja Singh may have run his final race, but his footsteps will echo through generations.
