The police chief addressed the media in a news conference later that day, providing details about the alarming situation.
The incident unfolded at approximately 10:25 a.m. when reports of shots fired at city hall reached the Edmonton Police Service. Swift response from officers led to the apprehension of an adult male suspect within minutes. Chief McFee assured the public that the situation had concluded, emphasizing that there was no indication of accomplices and no ongoing threat to public safety.
During the attack, audio of the gunshots resonated through the live feed of the Emergency Advisory Committee meeting. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi and councillors Jo-Anne Wright and Aaron Paquette were present at the meeting, which was promptly adjourned for safety reasons.
The assailant gained access to city hall through the parkade, navigating through the building while discharging multiple shots and causing damage to glass structures. Notably, the suspect, reportedly dressed in a security uniform, was armed with a long gun and several Molotov cocktails, resulting in a small fire outside an elevator.
Remarkably, an unarmed Commissionaire detained the suspect before the arrival of law enforcement, displaying commendable bravery. Chief McFee expressed gratitude for the swift and effective response, emphasizing the fortunate absence of injuries or loss of life.
