After strong earthquakes hit the Pacific Ocean, people in several Kamchatka towns were told to move 2 to 3 kilometers inland or go up 30 to 40 meters in height to stay safe from a possible tsunami. Euro News

A powerful earthquake hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Sunday. The quake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale. It struck around 115 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a major city in the region. The tremors lasted nearly one minute, causing people to rush out of their homes in fear.

Tsunami Warning for Coastal Areas

After the earthquake, authorities issued a tsunami warning. Experts advised residents in several towns to move away from the coast. People living in low-lying areas were told to go at least 30 to 40 meters uphill or move 2 to 3 kilometers inland for safety.

Officials warned that even small waves could be dangerous. The village of Nikolskoye could see waves up to 29 centimeters high. Ust-Kamchatsk might experience waves around 19 centimeters. While these may sound small, they could still cause damage, especially in shallow or narrow bays.

Previous Earthquakes in the Area

Earlier that day, two smaller earthquakes had already shaken the region. One had a 5.3 magnitude and the other a 6.5. The second tremor was strong enough to be felt by residents. These earlier quakes may have weakened structures and increased fear among locals.

Emergency Response Teams Activated

Local emergency services quickly responded to the situation. The Ministry of Emergency Situations put all services on high alert. Teams will inspect buildings for damage in the coming hours. So far, no injuries or destruction have been reported.

People Urged to Stay Alert

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are being asked to remain calm but cautious. They should listen to official instructions and stay away from the shoreline. Emergency teams are ready to assist anyone in need.

Kamchatka’s History of Seismic Activity

Kamchatka lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Because of its location, such events are not uncommon. However, large quakes like this one still raise concerns, especially when they trigger tsunami warnings.

Community Prepares for Aftershocks

There is also a chance of aftershocks following the main earthquake. These smaller tremors could still cause damage. Authorities urge everyone to stay in safe areas and prepare for possible follow-up quakes.
