North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, left, supervises the test firings of two types of new anti-air missiles at undisclosed location, North Korea on 23 August 2025.
North Korea has again showcased its growing military strength. Leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the test-firing of two new antiair missile systems, according to state media reports released on Sunday. The development comes as South Korea and the United States conduct joint military drills, further fueling regional tensions.
North Korea Tests New Antiair Missiles
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Saturday’s test demonstrated the missiles’ effectiveness against aerial threats. These include drones and cruise missiles, which have become a focus in modern warfare. KCNA added that Kim issued “important” tasks to defense scientists, though it did not provide details.
No specifics were released about the location of the test or the types of missiles fired. Interestingly, Kim made no direct remarks aimed at Washington or Seoul during the event.
Tensions Amid South Korea-Japan Talks
The missile test coincided with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s visit to Tokyo. He met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and both leaders pledged stronger cooperation. They also highlighted the importance of trilateral security ties with the United States to counter shared challenges, particularly North Korea’s nuclear program.
President Lee is scheduled to fly to Washington for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. The timing of North Korea’s missile test, just before this meeting, is being closely watched by analysts.
Kim’s Stalled Talks with U.S. and Seoul
Despite repeated calls from Seoul and Washington, North Korea continues to reject dialogue over its nuclear weapons program. Instead, Kim has focused on strengthening alliances with countries opposing U.S. influence, particularly Russia.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea has sent thousands of troops and large quantities of weapons, including artillery and ballistic missiles, to aid Moscow’s war effort. Experts warn this cooperation could open the door for Russia to provide advanced military technology to North Korea.
Russia-North Korea Military Links Grow
Military experts believe North Korea’s aging radar and antiair systems could be upgraded with Russian assistance. Last November, South Korea’s previous government reported that Russia had already provided weapons and equipment to bolster Pyongyang’s air defenses. However, the exact systems supplied were not disclosed.
Adding to this partnership, Kim recently hosted a ceremony in Pyongyang to honor North Korean troops who fought in Ukraine. He awarded “hero” titles to returning soldiers and placed medals beside portraits of 101 fallen fighters. KCNA described them as “great men, great heroes and great patriots.”
Thousands of North Korean Troops in Ukraine
South Korea estimates that North Korea has deployed around 15,000 troops to Russia since last autumn. Approximately 600 soldiers have reportedly been killed in combat.
Beyond frontline fighters, Kim has also agreed to send military construction workers and deminers to Russia’s Kursk region. South Korean intelligence believes this deployment could take place soon, further deepening Pyongyang’s military involvement in the war.
What the Missile Tests Signal
The recent missile tests highlight two major points. First, North Korea is determined to strengthen its defenses against advanced aerial threats. Second, Kim Jong Un is using these demonstrations to project confidence as major diplomatic summits unfold in Tokyo and Washington.
For now, the world watches closely. North Korea’s missile advancements, combined with its growing partnership with Russia, raise serious concerns for regional and global security.
