New York City became the meeting spot for hundreds of people who all share the same first name. On Saturday, Union Square hosted the second annual “Rytoberfest,” a gathering that brought together men and women named Ryan.
The event took place at Torch and Crown and aimed to break a world record for the largest number of people with the same name gathered in one place. At the same time, it raised money for a cause close to many hearts.
A Name with a Purpose
Rytoberfest was organized by Ryan Meetup, a group focused on uniting people with the same first name. Their goal is to one day secure a Guinness World Record.
“It’s crazy seeing this many Ryans in one place, and I don’t know. It’s so unreal ... Everyone has the same name as you,” said Ryan Clapham, who came all the way from Australia to join.
Charity at the Centre
Beyond fun and camaraderie, the gathering supported the Ryan Callahan Foundation. Founded by former New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan, the charity helps children fighting cancer and provides support for their families. All proceeds from Rytoberfest went to this foundation, making the event both festive and meaningful.
History of the Event
The first Rytoberfest happened in New York in October 2023. More than 200 Ryans joined that event, proving that the idea of a name-based gathering could draw large numbers.
Since then, Ryan Meetup has continued to organize events across the country, with each one attracting more participants. Their rules are clear: only people with the first name Ryan can join. No Bryans, and no one with Ryan as a last name. Alternate spellings, however, are welcome.
Chasing the World Record
The group has its eyes set on the official Guinness World Record. The current record belongs to more than 2,000 people named Ivan, who gathered in a Balkan town in 2017. While Rytoberfest has not yet reached that number, organizers believe that future events will grow large enough to compete.
A Community Built on a Shared Name
For those who attend, the event is about more than chasing a title. It builds a sense of community, shared humour, and identity. Meeting strangers with the same name creates bonds that stretch beyond borders.
With people flying in from as far as Australia, the event has already shown its global appeal. The organizers plan to continue expanding until their dream of a record-breaking Ryan gathering becomes reality.
