Emergency crews attend the scene after multiple people were hurt in a police-involved shooting on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, in North Codorus, Pennsylvania. AP
others were wounded and hospitalized in stable but critical condition. Authorities said officers were at the scene to follow up on a domestic-related investigation that began the previous day. The shooter was killed by police.
“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day,” said Governor Josh Shapiro. “We grieve the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, who served this Commonwealth, who served this country.” He added, “This kind of violence is not OK. We need to do better as a society.”
The attack marks one of the deadliest days for Pennsylvania law enforcement this century, echoing a similar 2009 incident when three Pittsburgh officers were ambushed while responding to a domestic call.
Community Responds to the Violence
Condolences poured in from police departments across the region, and residents left flowers at the Northern York Regional Police Department headquarters. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said, “The grief will be unbearable but we will bear it,” and promised a full and fair investigation into the events.
The shooting took place in North Codorus Township, about 115 miles west of Philadelphia, near the Maryland border. Local resident Dirk Anderson said he heard “quite a few” shots while working in his shop and saw a helicopter and numerous police vehicles responding to the scene.
Authorities have not yet identified the officers or the shooter, citing the ongoing investigation. Families of the slain officers met with officials and expressed pride in their loved ones despite their grief.
Federal Support and Law Enforcement Presence
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi called the attack “a scourge on our society” and confirmed federal agents were assisting local authorities. The emergency response included about 30 police vehicles blocking roads near farms and fields, keeping the public at a safe distance.
This tragic event follows another deadly shooting earlier this year, when an armed man attacked a hospital ICU, resulting in the death of an officer and the suspect.
Governor Calls for Change
Shapiro emphasized the broader social issues behind such violence. “We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun is the answer to resolving disputes,” he said. He also stressed the importance of improving mental health support and caring for vulnerable individuals to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Impact on the Community
The rural community remains shaken. Residents continue to process the loss while local and state authorities work to ensure safety and accountability. Police departments, families, and citizens are united in mourning, while investigators piece together the events that led to this deadly confrontation.
