Police Warn Public to Stay Indoors
An emergency alert went out across northern Ontario on Friday evening after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received reports of an armed and dangerous man near the Temagami North and Latchford area.
Officers quickly responded to the scene on Roosevelt Road, warning residents to stay away from the area. “A heavy police presence is in the area and those in the vicinity should stay away from Roosevelt Road,” police said in a statement.
According to OPP, the suspect, who is armed with a long gun, entered a wooded area southeast of Latchford. Police immediately closed Highway 11 between Marcotte Avenue in Latchford and Highway 64 while they searched the area.
Traffic Detours and Road Closures
The closure of Highway 11 caused delays for drivers travelling through the region. OPP advised motorists heading toward Temiskaming to use alternate routes. Drivers could either detour through Quebec or take Highway 11 to Highway 560. Police asked anyone stuck in traffic to remain patient and follow instructions from officers at the scene.
Public Urged to Take Shelter
Authorities issued a list of urgent safety instructions for those in the affected communities. People outdoors were told to seek shelter right away. Those already inside were advised to lock all doors and windows and stay put until further notice.
Residents were also asked to close their curtains, avoid drawing attention, and not engage with anyone suspicious. Police urged anyone who spots the suspect to call 911 immediately rather than attempting to approach or confront him.
Drivers were told to continue directly to their destinations, avoid unnecessary stops, and secure themselves once they arrive. Police also reminded everyone not to travel to the area until the situation is resolved.
Suspect Description Released
In a later update, OPP provided details about the suspect. He is described as approximately 5-foot-9 with a medium build and blue eyes. The man was last seen wearing a light beige or grey Tilley-style hat, dark brown clothing, and carrying a military-style backpack.
Officers continue to search the surrounding wooded areas and highways. Police warned that residents could expect to see a large police presence as the operation continues.
Community on Edge After Recent Incident
The situation has left many residents uneasy, as a similar emergency unfolded in the same region earlier this year. OPP acknowledged the stress caused by the alerts but assured residents that every precaution is being taken to keep the public safe.
“We recognize the significant emotional impact that receiving an emergency alert can cause,” police said. “OPP is taking every precaution necessary to resolve this situation.”
Ongoing Search Overnight
Shortly after 11:30 p.m., police confirmed that the search was still underway and that Highway 11 remained closed. Authorities thanked residents for their patience and understanding, urging everyone to continue avoiding the area until further notice.
Anyone with information about the suspect’s location should contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers. In case of emergency, residents are reminded to call 911.
