The newly elected mayor of a small town in western Germany is fighting for her life after a brutal stabbing outside her home.
Iris Stalzer, 57, was found with severe injuries around midday Tuesday in the city of Herdecke, located in the Ruhr region. Police confirmed she suffered life-threatening wounds and was rushed to hospital by helicopter.
Officials said her condition remains critical, and doctors continue to fight to save her.
Police Investigate Possible Family Connection
Police said there was no sign that the attack was politically motivated. Investigators believe the motive may involve personal or family matters. “Based on current information, there are no indications that the attack was politically motivated. A family background is assumed,” police in Hagen said.
Authorities have launched a full investigation and are considering all possible motives. Officers have not released details about any suspects or arrests.
The shocking attack has left the local community shaken, as residents struggle to understand how such violence could occur in their quiet town.
National Leaders Express Concern
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous crime.” He expressed deep concern for the mayor-elect’s condition.
“We fear for the life of the mayor-elect, Iris Stalzer, and hope for her full recovery. My thoughts are with her family and loved ones,” Merz wrote on social media.
Members of Stalzer’s party, the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), also released statements of support and called for calm as police investigate.
Community in Shock
Stalzer was elected mayor of Herdecke in a runoff vote on September 28 and was due to take office in November. She is known locally as a devoted public servant and a mother of two teenagers.
The city administration said it was “in shock and disbelief” after hearing the news. Officials declined to share more details, saying their focus was on supporting Stalzer’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.
Local media reported that residents placed flowers and candles outside the town hall as a sign of solidarity.
Growing Concern Over Violence
While police believe this attack may not be political, Germany has seen a worrying rise in violence targeting public officials. In 2019, a neo-Nazi murdered Walter Lübcke, a regional official who supported refugee rights. That case deeply affected the country and sparked calls for better protection for local leaders.
Authorities now face pressure to ensure the safety of mayors and other officials, especially as tensions rise across Europe over political and social issues.
For now, residents of Herdecke are waiting for updates and hoping for good news about their new mayor. The entire town, along with leaders across Germany, is rallying behind Stalzer and her family.
