Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally assured him that India would halt its purchases of Russian oil.

Trump said this shift could significantly increase pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which began nearly four years ago with Russia’s invasion.

“There will be no oil. He’s not buying oil,” Trump told reporters. He added that the change would not happen immediately but expected it to occur “within a short period of time.”

The Indian government has not confirmed Trump’s statement. Requests for comment to the Indian embassy in Washington went unanswered.

Trump Frustrated by Ukraine War Stalemate

Trump has expressed mounting frustration over the inability to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. He has repeatedly singled out Russian President Vladimir Putin as the key obstacle to a resolution.

In his effort to influence outcomes, Trump is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. Observers suggest this meeting may further shape his push for international support against Moscow’s military actions.

India’s Role in Global Oil Trade

India is currently the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, trailing only China. This has made the country a critical player in Russia’s energy exports.

In August, Trump imposed higher tariffs on India, citing the nation’s continued reliance on Russian oil. Analysts see this as part of his broader strategy to compel New Delhi to align more closely with Western sanctions.

Potential Implications for Moscow

If India follows through on reducing or halting oil imports from Russia, it could have significant economic and geopolitical consequences. Russian energy revenues, a vital source of funding for the war effort, may be curtailed.

Such a move would also signal a shift in India’s historically neutral stance on the conflict, further isolating Moscow on the international stage.

Skepticism and Global Reactions

Despite Trump’s statements, some experts remain cautious. India has maintained a careful diplomatic balance, managing relations with both Russia and the West. Analysts note that any abrupt halt in oil purchases could disrupt India’s energy security and domestic fuel prices.

Moreover, there is no official confirmation from the Indian government about Trump’s claim. Global markets and policymakers are likely to monitor developments closely in the coming weeks.

Trump’s Diplomatic Gambit

Trump’s remarks underline his continued engagement with foreign policy even after leaving office. By publicly announcing India’s alleged commitment, he may be attempting to pressure Russia further and influence Western policy debates.

While the immediate impact remains uncertain, the statement adds another layer of tension to the complex web of international diplomacy surrounding the Ukraine war.
