The Winnipeg Blue Bombers narrowly defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 17-16 in a tense West Division clash on Friday night at Princess Auto Stadium. With both teams struggling to score, it was Sergio Castillo’s walk-off field goal that sealed the victory for the home side.
Wilson Sparks Early Offense
Ontaria Wilson opened the scoring for Winnipeg with a 28-yard touchdown catch. After that, Castillo became the key contributor for the Bombers, converting field goals and the extra point. Running back Brady Oliveira impressed, rushing for 75 yards and adding 29 receiving yards on three catches. Quarterback Zach Collaros completed 15 of 24 passes for 182 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception.
Roughriders Rest Star Players
Already atop the West Division, Saskatchewan rested several starters, including Trevor Harris and A.J. Ouellette. Backup Jake Maier began at quarterback, going 15-20 for 123 yards before Jack Coan took over in the fourth quarter. Coan ran in Saskatchewan’s only touchdown shortly after Winnipeg fumbled the opening kickoff. Receiver Mitchell Picton led the Riders with five catches for 71 yards.
Early Turnovers Set the Tone
Winnipeg’s Trey Vaval fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Saskatchewan a fast start. A flea flicker on the first play led to a defensive pass interference penalty, bringing the Riders to Winnipeg’s one-yard line. Coan’s quarterback sneak put Saskatchewan up 7-0 within the first two minutes.
Winnipeg responded with a seven-play drive, highlighted by Gavin Cobb’s two catches for first downs. Collaros connected with Wilson for a 28-yard touchdown, and Castillo tied the game at 7-7. Saskatchewan’s Mario Alford returned the kickoff 54 yards, giving the Riders favorable field position. Back-to-back tackles for loss forced Saskatchewan to settle for Brett Lauther’s 39-yard field goal, making it 10-7.
Bombers Fight Back
Oliveira showcased his agility on a 22-yard catch-and-run. Jerreth Sterns, a former Roughrider, added 28 yards on a jet sweep, setting up a first-and-goal. Winnipeg failed to punch it in from six yards, settling for a Castillo field goal.
After four early scoring drives, the game slowed with six consecutive punts in the second quarter. Key defensive plays, including a sack by James Vaughters on Maier and a tackle by Antoine Brooks Jr. on Collaros, dominated the half. Winnipeg briefly led 11-10 after a rouge from a Jamieson Sheahan punt. Lauther’s 42-yard field goal at halftime gave Saskatchewan a narrow 13-11 lead.
Second Half Drama
A fumble by Maier, recovered by Jaiden Woodbey, gave Winnipeg a post-halftime boost. Castillo’s 23-yard field goal put the Bombers ahead 14-13. Lauther responded with a 31-yard kick, giving Saskatchewan a 16-14 lead heading into the final quarter.
Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth. Coan and Collaros each posted two-and-outs. Picton’s impressive 30-yard reception set up a 49-yard field goal attempt by Lauther, which sailed wide right. Vaval returned the miss to midfield, but Winnipeg couldn’t capitalize.
Castillo’s Walk-Off Secures Victory
Starting at midfield, Winnipeg gradually moved into field goal range. Oliveira’s 16-yard rush and Streveler’s third-down effort extended the drive. Castillo then delivered the game-winning 22-yard kick as time expired, handing the Bombers a 17-16 victory.

In Week 21, Winnipeg will host the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday, October 25. Saskatchewan wraps up its regular season at home against the BC Lions later that same day.
