The Edmonton Oilers dropped a winnable game against the New York Rangers Thursday at Rogers Place. Despite building a 3-1 lead, defensive miscues and turnovers cost them the game in overtime.

Early Back-and-Forth

The opening period ended 1-1, with both teams trading scoring chances. Edmonton outshot New York in the second period 14-8, and the Oilers appeared to be in control. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl created several dangerous opportunities, while the Oilers’ goaltender, Stuart Skinner, made key saves to keep the lead intact.

Oilers Defensive Breakdowns Costly

The Oilers’ defense faltered in critical moments. Two costly turnovers allowed New York to tie the game at 3-3. Skinner faced multiple high-pressure situations, stopping 30 of 34 shots, but could not overcome his team’s errors. The OT winner was a direct result of defensive indecision, leaving a Rangers player with an open lane.

Player Highlights and Lowlights

Connor McDavid (4/10): McDavid created multiple chances but struggled to finish. He drew a power play and executed key passes, but failed to convert on a crucial OT opportunity.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (5/10): Solid defensively, Nugent-Hopkins excelled in backchecking and PK play. His passing was occasionally risky but overall he contributed effectively.

Andrew Mangiapane (4/10): A difficult night for Mangiapane, beaten in defensive battles and failing to capitalize on scoring chances.

Evan Bouchard (2/10): Turnovers haunted Bouchard all night. His poor decisions led directly to two goals against. A brief hustle moment aside, he struggled with game management.

Darnell Nurse (8/10): Nurse bounced back strongly after a benching in the previous game. He scored twice and made several critical defensive plays, keeping the Oilers competitive.

Leon Draisaitl (5/10): Effective offensively at times, Draisaitl recorded secondary assists and contributed to scoring chances. However, he misread the OT play and failed to prevent the loss.

Vasily Podkolzin (6/10): Podkolzin’s forechecking and shot attempts made an impact. He created scoring chances and applied pressure consistently throughout the game.

Jack Roslovic (7/10): Roslovic was sharp offensively, delivering high-quality passes and contributing to goals. He also showed solid defensive awareness.

Adam Henrique (8/10): Celebrating his 1,000th NHL game, Henrique shined with assists, strong puck drives, and impactful plays in key moments.

Matt Savoie (7/10): Scored his first NHL goal and showed awareness in both offensive and defensive sequences.

Defensive Pairings and Support

Mattias Ekholm (4/10) had mixed results, making some key stops but struggling alongside weaker partners. Jake Walman (6/10) contributed offensively but made a critical misplay leading to a Rangers goal. Brett Kulak, Ty Emberson, Troy Stecher, David Tomasek, and Ike Howard provided solid but unspectacular support across defensive roles.

Missed Opportunity

The Oilers held the lead for much of the game but were undone by turnovers and inconsistent play. While forwards created scoring chances, the defensive lapses and miscues in crucial moments allowed New York to snatch a 4-3 overtime victory.

The Oilers now face a critical test to tighten their defensive play and convert offensive chances if they hope to maintain playoff contention.
