Tyler Bertuzzi delivered a stunning third-period hat trick, leading the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-2 road victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. Goalie Spencer Knight was outstanding, stopping 43 shots and keeping Chicago in the game during Vancouver’s early onslaught.
The win snapped Chicago’s three-game winless streak (0-2-1) and ended a long drought against Vancouver. The Blackhawks had struggled in their last 11 meetings with the Canucks, going 0-10-1 since the 2021-22 season. That streak matched a franchise record for Vancouver’s longest winning run against a single opponent.
Knight’s Heroics Keep Chicago Blackhawks in Contention
The Canucks dominated early, outshooting Chicago 35-19 through the first two periods. By the end of the game, Vancouver finished with a 45-28 shot advantage. Despite the pressure, Knight’s sharp reflexes and composure kept the Blackhawks scoreless until the third period, setting the stage for an explosive finale.
Third Period Eruption Lights Up the Scoreboard
The third period saw seven goals as both teams opened up offensively. Bertuzzi was the star, scoring twice in the first six minutes to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. His first goal came at 3:06, followed by another at 6:46, both converted from passes near the side of the net.
Vancouver responded with a goal from Ilya Mikheyev, but Bertuzzi struck again at 11:37 into the third, completing his third-period hat trick and fourth career NHL hat trick in ten seasons.
Bedard Shines With Key Contributions
Connor Bedard added to Chicago’s lead with an empty-net goal and an assist, extending his point streak to six games. Over that span, the young forward has accumulated 11 points, with five goals and six assists. Ryan Donato also played a key role, assisting on two of Chicago’s tallies.
Late Canucks Rally Falls Short
Late in the third, Aatu Raty and Evander Kane scored for Vancouver, spoiling Knight’s shutout bid and giving the home team a glimmer of hope. However, Bedard sealed the game with a final empty-net goal with one minute remaining.
Earlier in the contest, Vancouver’s Drew O’Connor appeared to score first at 8:34 in the second period. The goal was overturned after video review, which confirmed O’Connor had collided with Knight. Chicago coach Jeff Blashill successfully challenged the play for goaltender interference.
Goaltending Performances Stand Out
Knight’s 43-save effort marked the second-highest save total of his career, improving his season record to 5-3-2. Meanwhile, Canucks goalie Kevin Lankinen stopped 23 of 27 shots, keeping Vancouver competitive despite the scoring surge in the third.
With this win, the Blackhawks not only ended a frustrating streak against the Canucks but also showcased their offensive firepower and resilience. Bertuzzi’s third-period heroics and Knight’s stellar goaltending highlighted a memorable road victory for Chicago.
