A powerful car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort on Monday left at least eight people dead and 19 injured, according to city police. The blast, which triggered a massive fire, damaged several vehicles and sent shockwaves through one of India’s busiest and most historic districts.
Panic Near Delhi’s Iconic Landmark
The explosion occurred near one of the Red Fort Metro Station gates, an area that sees heavy foot traffic throughout the day. Flames engulfed nearby vehicles, and thick plumes of smoke rose into the evening sky as residents and tourists fled the scene in panic.
Authorities rushed firefighters and emergency responders to the site. The blaze was eventually contained, but not before it destroyed several parked cars.
Eyewitnesses Recall the Horror
Residents described the terrifying moments after the blast.
“I was at home when I heard a deafening explosion,” said Om Prakash Gupta, who lives nearby. “When I stepped outside, I saw vehicles burning and body parts scattered on the road.”
Another witness, a cab driver named Shahrukh, said he ran for his life as panic spread among commuters. “People were screaming and running in all directions,” he said. “The fire spread so fast.”
Footage broadcast by local media showed charred cars, shattered windows, and emergency personnel cordoning off the site.
Immediate Security Measures Enforced
Following the Red Fort car blast, the government placed New Delhi on high alert. Security was tightened at the international airport, metro stations, and government buildings.
Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that a Hyundai i20 was involved in the explosion near a traffic signal close to the fort. He said CCTV footage from the area would be key to uncovering the cause.
“We are exploring all possibilities,” Shah told reporters. “A thorough investigation will be conducted, and findings will be shared with the public.”
Investigation Underway
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken charge of the probe, alongside Delhi Police and other federal agencies. Investigators are examining whether the explosion was accidental, criminal, or linked to a larger terror plot.
Sanjay Tyagi, spokesperson for the Delhi Police, said, “We are verifying all leads. The cause of the blast is under active investigation.”
The Delhi Fire Service confirmed that 19 people were injured and are being treated at a government hospital. Several remain in critical condition.
