A cyber incident has compelled an insurance company to temporarily halt its services for Canadian public servants stationed overseas or on travel.

February 13, 2024

In a sudden turn of events, an unnamed "cyber incident" has thrown the operations of an insurance company, responsible for serving Canadian public servants stationed abroad or travelling, into disarray. The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) dropped this bombshell announcement on Monday, sending ripples of concern throughout the affected community.

The victim of this digital assault is MSH International, a subcontractor to Canada Life entrusted with the critical task of providing emergency travel and comprehensive coverage services to members of the Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP). According to a terse statement from TBS, the gravity of the situation became apparent when MSH fell prey to this cyber menace.

Responding swiftly to safeguard its network and data, MSH took the drastic step of shutting down its services. To ensure rapid restoration of services without compromising security, the company has enlisted the expertise of an external cyber incident response firm. However, the fallout from this cyber intrusion is significant – MSH has been rendered incapable of processing PSHCP claims, leaving members unable to access vital services through the MSH Member Portal.

The full extent of the breach remains shrouded in mystery. TBS admits uncertainty regarding the nature and extent of the information accessed by the perpetrators. Both MSH and Canada Life, the parent company, are now engaged in a race against time, deploying all available resources to ascertain the scope of the incident and mitigate any potential fallout.

Meanwhile, the federal government, understandably perturbed by this unsettling development, has initiated discussions with Canada Life to closely monitor the unfolding situation. As authorities scramble to gather more intel, they have assured the affected community that any pertinent updates will be promptly disseminated.

The spectre of cyber threats looms large, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the operations of crucial services. For now, Canadian public servants abroad find themselves in a precarious position, awaiting further updates as the investigation unfolds.
