Debbie Zakaib has died after a short and difficult cancer battle. Her daughter, Daphnée Taillefer, shared the news publicly.
“My mom, my bestie , my life. Today, you left us after a short but difficult battle with cancer. There are no words to express the pain we are experiencing. Hold your moms so tight. To the most beautiful person who ever existed, I love you infinitely. Rest well,” she wrote.
Zakaib was married to businessman Alexandre Taillefer. The couple faced deep tragedy ten years ago. They lost their son, Thomas, a loss that shaped their lives forever.
A Strong Academic and Professional Path
Zakaib earned a master’s degree in marketing from HEC Montréal. Her research focused on fashion marketing in Quebec. She built a strong career in brand development. She worked with major global companies for nearly a decade.
Alongside corporate work, she wrote a weekly fashion blog. She also contributed urban affairs segments for public television. Her work blended culture, business, and creativity with ease.
Leadership in Arts and Fashion
Zakaib served on the board of the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation. She also chaired its annual fundraising gala. Colleagues praised her energy and clarity. She brought people together across creative industries.
From 2015 to 2022, she led Quebec’s fashion industry cluster. She worked to unite designers, retailers, and manufacturers. François Roberge called her the industry’s strongest ambassador.
“She built the mmode Cluster, she gave credibility to the Quebec fashion industry at the government level,” he said.
Transforming Quebec’s Food Scene
In recent years, Zakaib turned her focus to gastronomy. She played a key role in bringing the Michelin Guide to Quebec. She also helped raise the province’s profile internationally.
In 2023, she became executive director of La Table Ronde. Chef Normand Laprise praised her leadership.
“In the restaurant industry, I've seen many try to form partnerships and fail. The work that Debbie and her team have done is incredible.”
Vanya Filipovic echoed that praise.
