Anthony Geary, the actor who reshaped daytime television through his iconic role as Luke Spencer on General Hospital, has died. He was 78. Geary passed away on December 14 due to complications following a scheduled surgery three days earlier, according to his family.

His death marks the end of an era for American soap television. For decades, Geary remained one of the genre’s most recognizable and celebrated figures.

Just weeks before his passing, Geary was seen watching a podcast featuring former co-stars Genie Francis and Maurice Benard. The moment, shared by his husband Claudio Gama, brought him visible joy. He spoke warmly of friendship, talent, and memories that still mattered deeply.

Early Life and a Calling for Acting

Anthony Dean Geary was born on May 29, 1947, in Coalville, Utah. He was raised in a Mormon household by parents who valued stability and education. His father worked in construction. His mother managed the home. He grew up with three sisters.

Although his mother hoped he would become a teacher, Geary felt drawn to acting early. That instinct shaped his future.

While studying at the University of Utah, his talent caught an important eye. Veteran actor Jack Albertson attended one of his performances and offered him a touring role. That opportunity launched Geary’s professional career.

From Stage to Television Recognition

Geary remained devoted to theater throughout his life. He appeared in more than 50 stage productions, even as television fame grew. In the late 1960s, he moved to Los Angeles and began working steadily on television.

Early roles followed on popular shows such as The Partridge Family, The Mod Squad, and All in the Family. His soap career began with Bright Promise, followed by a controversial role on The Young and the Restless.

Everything changed in 1978.

Luke Spencer and Television History

Producer Gloria Monty cast Geary as Luke Spencer on General Hospital. The decision transformed the show and daytime television itself.

Paired with Genie Francis as Laura Webber, Geary helped create one of television’s most famous couples. Their 1980 storyline captivated audiences nationwide. Ratings soared. Luke and Laura became a cultural phenomenon.

In 1981, they appeared on the cover of Newsweek. Their on-screen wedding later that year drew nearly 30 million viewers. Elizabeth Taylor appeared during the event, later joining the show as Helena Cassadine.

It was a moment daytime television has never repeated.

Staying Power and Creative Range

Geary remained the backbone of General Hospital through cast changes and evolving storylines. He worked opposite future stars and returning favorites. He briefly left the show, returned as Luke’s cousin Bill Eckert, then reclaimed the role that defined his career.

Beyond soaps, Geary built a varied screen resume. His film and television credits included UHF, Scorchers, The Disorderlies, and Carpool Guy. His range extended beyond genre boundaries.

His final acting work was filmed just one day before his hospitalization.

Life Beyond the Spotlight

Geary retired from General Hospital in 2015. He chose a quiet life in Amsterdam, a city he loved deeply. There, he lived away from the industry that had long revolved around him.

He is survived by his husband, Claudio Gama, who described Geary as his lifelong companion and closest friend. Their family also included their beloved cat, Max.

A Lasting Legacy

Anthony Geary won eight Daytime Emmy Awards. Yet his true legacy reaches further than trophies. He helped elevate daytime drama into mainstream culture. He challenged expectations. He redefined what a soap opera star could be.

Though Luke Spencer will remain his most famous role, Anthony Geary’s impact endures as fearless, transformative, and singular. Daytime television will not see his like again.
