Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-day State visit to Ethiopia on a notably personal note. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali welcomed him at Addis Ababa airport, setting a warm and informal tone for the high-level visit.

In a rare diplomatic gesture, Abiy Ahmed personally chauffeured PM Modi from the airport to his hotel. The moment reflected the closeness both leaders seek to project between their countries.

Unscheduled stops add personal touch

During the drive, the Ethiopian Prime Minister made a special effort to showcase Addis Ababa beyond protocol. He took PM Modi to the Science Museum and Friendship Park, locations not included in the official itinerary.

These unscheduled stops highlighted Ethiopia’s emphasis on innovation, culture, and people-centric spaces. The gesture was widely seen as symbolic of trust and personal rapport between the two leaders.

Indian community offers cultural welcome

Members of the Indian diaspora in Ethiopia gave PM Modi a heartfelt reception. They greeted him by singing the patriotic song “Aisa Desh Hai Mera,” creating an emotional moment during the visit.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the warmth and enthusiasm of the community. He later expressed his appreciation on social media, thanking them for the affectionate welcome.

Focus on strengthening bilateral ties

The visit is aimed at deepening India–Ethiopia relations across several key sectors. Discussions are expected to focus on trade expansion, agricultural cooperation, education partnerships, and technology exchange.

Both sides see strong potential in boosting economic engagement and investment flows. Ethiopia is one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies and a key regional player.

Talks on regional and global issues

PM Modi is expected to hold high-level meetings with Ethiopian leadership during his stay. These discussions will also cover regional and global issues of shared concern.

India and Ethiopia have historically maintained friendly relations. The visit seeks to add fresh momentum to that partnership amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Engagement with business and diaspora

As part of his schedule, PM Modi will meet members of the Indian community living in Ethiopia. He is also set to address a joint business forum involving leaders from both countries.

The forum is expected to explore new opportunities for collaboration, particularly in manufacturing, infrastructure, and digital innovation.

A step forward in India–Africa relations

The visit is being viewed as an important milestone in India’s engagement with Africa. Ethiopia, the continent’s second-most populous nation, plays a crucial role in regional diplomacy and development.

By combining formal talks with personal diplomacy, the visit underscores India’s intent to build long-term, people-driven partnerships in Africa.

PM Modi’s Ethiopia trip reflects a broader push to strengthen ties rooted in mutual respect, economic cooperation, and shared global interests.
