A small plane operated by the Mexican Navy crashed Monday afternoon near Galveston, Texas, killing at least five people and triggering a wide search along the coast. The aircraft carried a young medical patient and seven others when it went down near the water.
Officials said the crash happened close to the base of a causeway near Galveston, an island community about 50 kilometres southeast of Houston. Emergency crews moved quickly to the scene as parts of the plane entered nearby waters.
Who Was on Board
Mexico’s Navy said four people on the plane were Navy officers and four were civilians, including a child. Authorities have not yet confirmed which passengers were among the dead.
Two of the civilians worked with the Michou and Mau Foundation, a non-profit group that helps Mexican children who suffer from serious burns. The foundation often supports medical transfers for young patients who need specialized care.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Luke Baker said at least five people died in the crash, though officials continued efforts to confirm identities.
Search and Rescue Efforts
The Mexican Navy said the aircraft took part in a medical mission when it had an “accident.” Officials said they will investigate what caused the crash and will assist local responders during recovery efforts.
Emergency teams from several agencies arrived shortly after the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board sent personnel to examine the site, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
An NTSB spokesperson said investigators are “aware of this accident and are gathering information about it.”
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said its dive team, crime scene unit, drone operators, and patrol officers responded to the crash. Officials asked residents and visitors to stay away from the area so crews could work safely.
Weather Conditions Under Review
Authorities have not confirmed whether weather played a role in the crash. The region has seen foggy conditions in recent days, according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologist Cameron Batiste said fog rolled into the area around 2:30 p.m. Monday, reducing visibility to about half a mile. Investigators will review weather data as part of their work.
Community Shocked
Galveston draws thousands of visitors for its beaches and coastal views. The sudden crash near a busy roadway shocked residents and tourists alike. Local officials closed nearby areas to allow emergency teams to search the water and secure debris.
The investigation will continue in the coming days as authorities work to understand what happened and identify all victims. Officials said they will release more details once they confirm information.
